overclock laptop gpu-not stupid idea

as you may know, I am the proud owner of a dell inspiron 8600 machine with a tiny 1.6 pentium m and 1GB ram with a mid powered 128mb radeon mobility

well, you may also know this is my gaming computer, running some of the newest games such as doom 3, battlefield 2, fs9, need for speed most wanted and gta san andreas

i saw that there was some spare heat usage available (better not put it to waste)
So, I thought, why not overclock it- and thats exactly what I did!

Went from 337/227 MHZ to 355/299, and man the results were mindblowing
my fps on fs9, at a busy airport with water effects on high, mipmapping on 6 and weather on cold fronts, I managed to get a constant 20-50 FPS instead of 7-20 before

Pushing the graphics to its extreme in need for speed, the temp never went over 85 degrees celcius (quite warm, but normal for gaming laptop, especially a DELL!)

So, anyone with a notebook whos willing to squeez some extra juice out of it, and have some fun too, I would recommend overclocking the GPU (just dont get stupid or youll blow yourself up)

In case you want to know, I got a 3dmark of 240 in the performance test I downloaded, and before the overclock, it was around 180.

Doesn't overclocking shorten the cards life?
Your lucky you didn't push it too far and overheat it! Just the other day I was reading a book listing lots of reasons why you shouldn't overclock..... Good on ya for giving it a go thow lol

I wounder if I can do it on my system..............

i beleive it does shorten your cards life, only if you are stupid. e.g running insane clock speeds, not monitoring temperatures, etc. Otherwise, im sure its mostly harmless.

yeah, we're talking about it dying after 6 years instead of 8 (i just made these figures up, i'm not sure of the true effect of overclocking). but i'm sure you don't plan to use it in 6 years time anyway.

my clock speed 557,and 450mhz on a 256mb asus this was the settings ive been told by the shop that are resonable and wht there home pc,s run at that ,,
the life of card well in pc,s i replace my all the time so i dont mind really if she blowns or not
