Hi all , Friday night TV3 news had a large report on the DAMBUSTER's a new Peter Jackson Project - , This is a famous and daring attack on the Rhur Dams in August 1943 , 617 sqaudron .. We even have one off the pilot aircrew in NZ (wish i had got his name) , way he spoke how flyin a Lanc was like drivin a bus ,This is a new movie project which i going to see the end result , I have not seen LOTR's or KONG , but this movie has hit a nerve , right in my area of history and others also .

Got a 1/48th scale model of AJ-G, G for George, the Lanc that finally burst the Mohene Dam. Got the old original movie as well, one of my all time wartime flying favourites, along with the movie "633 Squadron" as well.

That'll put Peter back on track, for sure.
Know what got me?
They go in at night so they can't be seen, flying treetops high in the dark, navigators looking out for powerlines rather than starshots...
THEN, right in the most heavliy defended area over the dam, they get to switch on a pair of High-Powered spotlights aimed to coincide on the water surface, at correct altitude.
HELLO?? Here we are boys, been waiting long then? Aim either end just where you see the nice bright light shining...

I beleive this new movie/project is going to really show peoples planes in a very different way , 2 years won't be that long , thought maybe Pete requires train'd Lanc pilots :D maybe get on the squadron for the maybe? , :)

Ian
633 Sqn RAF is fictional. I was a member of the RAF guard of honour for the film premiere. That was in Exeter as all the aircraft had been based there as a target towing flight.

I'd stick with the name , '' for dog not nice -part off history , sure they'll keep with or it won't be honest . It will also be the first movie that i'll see on the big screen for a long time unless an equal is released in suject or area off interest .

633 thanx STEEL , good to find that out , I must check to see if 633 was or a unit , i'll post result for interest . Sure Lawrie would also like the no on this .

Ian

I missed the TV3 program about the movie, but recently saw an ad in the paper for it- can't wait to see it now :D

I remember watching the original 1954 black and white movie on video a few years ago, after visiting RAF Henderson (Museum in London) and seeing some Lanc's up close. The movie kept me excited the whole way though, just the idea of flying these huge Lanc bombers only meters above the ground in the dead of night made me want to join the airforce

Another great WW2 movie is "Reach for the Sky" which is an adaptation of Douglas Bader' autobiography (which I have a signed copy of as my old next door neighbours where good friends with him before he died). It is one truly incredible story.

BTW Ian Warren, great screenies, I would like the model myself. Just wondering if the Aeroplane Heaven aircraft came with the actual "mission" in the flights menu where you fly with an AI squadron over to the Rhine at nightime...?
