What scenery areas do you want to see?

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

I said I wanted Hamilton! So I went and made my own. :P B) Available at AVSIM right now, and at Flightsim.com later, Hamilton is just a fill-in scenery until Robin can get his finished. It's just the terminal, but it does make a difference for those who fly commercially into the airport.

Enjoy!

"...But then again some one with EZ Scenery could do the Chateau Airport at Ruapehu? "

I make my own little additions for private use and am prepared to live with the amateurish result because it is mine. But to publish into a world containing the available high standard of scenery?? The FS world will discover NZ as a little backwater, dwelling in FS98 land.
Sounds negative I know, but I've always been amazed by the high standard of offerings in this hobby. I reckon something that doesn't advance the game is a waste.

Bloody annoys me that as soon as MS announce the next version that everyone seems to go on holiday waiting its release.

Well for a start nearly all of NZ that has free colour photos available have been done.
To do a proper job when doing scenery it takes hundreds of hours work placing trees and autogen objects
If doing airports you have to get photos of all buildings, design them in Gmax etc. just ask Robin Corn how long it takes to do an area from start to finish.

Just to let you know I have been working on putting waves back around the coastline of NZ since Christian released his mesh and I am not halfway around the coastline as yet.
I may have it available in about another 6 months

So why not do some scenery yourself if you get sick of waiting it gets quite addictive
after a while

Howdy,

NZ has always been poorly represented in Flight Sim. This, more in terms of landscape than airports. By FS2002, I suspect that photo-real scenery was seen as the possible solution to correct many of these deficiencies. Thus, an incredible amount of time and energy over the past 4+ years was expended in that area, all to the detriment of quality airport design.

With the release of Christian's NZTopo and corrected LandClass we are now beginning to see a return to what scenery designers should have been concentrating upon all along ... photo-real airports.

Of course, all this has come wayyyyyy too late, as, once again, the majority of NZ flightsimmers begin to gear up for the release of FSX and a whole new raft of localised problems for scenery designers to solve.

If we getting in a spitting contest as to what has been produced in New Zealand I can think of several areas where the same authors have done the same region several times.

Good point, perhaps this site can be the start of a unified NZ effort. Trolly has already set up an Announcements forum, posting there could prevent wasted effort with duplication if everybody knows who's doing what. Could also be the place to ask for help with photo's, local knowledge etc.

In reply to Toprob about Dunedin scenery getting pushed to the back of the queue. The freeware Dunedin v2 is pretty good,it goes OK on top of my Red Baron 20m but I seem to have lost the textures on the grass.I would love to see a Dunedin scenery that covers Tairei airfield and the whole of Dunedin and the Otago peninsula. The 20m mesh is great but the autogen is well-wrong.I live about half way down the peninsula at Broad Bay so naturally want it done! The area has alot going for it and done properly would be a gem.NZ's only castle, ships,Port Chalmers, lighthouses,Wharves,Albatross colony,Penguins and whales just off the top of my head! I would very much like to learn how to make sceneries, can anyone point me in the right direction? I've downloaded a couple of scenery makers but haven't a clue what to do with them as there is no instructions or help at all! I do have a reasonable amount of time to commit, maybe I could learn by helping someone else.I'm a quick learner and easy to deal with if anyone is interested. I do know that my PC is up to the job I just need to start at the beginning. It's like picking up a roll of sellotape and not being able to find the start!

If you go to Avsim/file library and type in Dunedin you"ll get quite a bit to choose from. I like the v3. I said v2 in my post but meant v3. The one by Corcoran and the one by DeBono are the most impressive. The Tairei for FS2002 by Robin Corn works well in FS9/2004. I have bought the Red Baron 20m&topo less than a week ago,had to start from scratch and reinstall FS then the new mesh and add each airport one by one checking each one in between.I must have had some addon that wouldn't let me install my new puchase! It just wouldn't show in the FS9 CFG. I had so many addon's all freeware so in the end I deleted FS and start again. One or other of my addon's had deleted the uninstall icon in the root folder so I had to do it by "hand". I've not yet checked which one(s) go with the new mesh yet.All the freeware files at Avsim are the airport and buildings only except Robins' Tairei. It is this surrouding area I'm particularly interested in,but with the city and peninsula too. I would be more than happy to pay for a decent version of the area Robin.(I saw in another thread you thought maybe freeware fans might frown at you for trying to make a living out of making sceneries) I for one say ABSOLUTELY NOT. I wish there was more people like you who do what others can't or won't do themselves.People like me who can't (but am very keen to learn) are more than happy,"ecstatic" in fact to pay.You know what your product is worth and so do the freeware developers. That is in no way a dig at freeware, there is some great stuff that is amazing but with payware you expect more and like anything the more you pay the more you think you have something of value.Like I have said I just bought the Red Baron mesh & topo for $105,my first payware scenery ever.I am wrapped with it and I will be buying all of your payware stuff too. I just hope you do a Dunedin and surrounding area sooner rather than later. I am at the same place you were years ago wishing someone would do something. If that someone is me then that is fine,I'd much rather help others so the same hard graft is not duplicated but added to like the VOZ guys who all deserve a Knighthood.I see there will be a payware Voz at some stage and yes I'll get that too.Excuse the long post everyone I'm usually brief but this is my number one wish in FS and Santa Claus has been no help,i'm still waiting for me %#&*#@! bike.

I have the original Godzone Tairei photoreal but no actual city scenery.

My mate visited there last week and all of a sudden I have the urge to get some scenery for the area- I was wondering if there was any acutal freeware photoreal of the actual CBD and peninsular?

As for Dunedin International, I have tried a few freeware ones but they all where pretty bad and looked out of place on the Tairei photoreal.

Any more suggestions/links?

Sorry I can't be of any help,I feel exactly the same.I want scenery rather than airports and AFCADS(although they are great too) I fly mainly VFR helo's and light twins, floatplanes all of which can take off and land just about anywhere within reason so this is why scenery is more important to me than airports. We just have to keep encouraging people like Robin,Deanne,Warren,Savern and all the others that we want it and are happy to pay for it if required. I've just bought Real NZ Auckland off "trade me"so havn't been here for a few days which is why I have taken so long to reply,sorry-not that I've been any help!

I agree with Codge.

But the actual airports also need some work. There's just something not right about having our smaller airport with what looks like a multi story office block on the end of one of it's grass strips.

How about PNth (don't laugh) we have PNth Int'l and within close range Foxpine, Taonui(Feilding), RNZAF Ohakea plus the Ruahines and Tararuas are nearby to play in. There are plenty of top dressing strips around the place also.

Depending on how big the area covered was made - Wanganui and Dannevirke could also be included.

THis could lead to joining up with Robins upcoming release of Wgtn if Paraparaumu was done at some stage.

The person talking aboutblenheim airport, there is no such thing. There is picton (NZPN), woodbourne (NZWB) and Omaka (NZOM).

Woodbourne is an RNZAF base, and omaka is where airshows are held.

Well, whatever its called, the whole Marlborough area would be great for FS9/X.

Currently I fly from Deane Baunton's Omaka, which is fantastic to see, but needs a little updating (the "strip" hangars for instance, and the Aviation Heritage Centre). And (if its not too much to ask) a couple of AI versions of some resident vintage a/c? A Fokker or three, the Hawker Hurricane replica, Pat Donovan's Lockheed 12?

In fact, how about the Bristol Freighter outside the MAC clubhouse? Make for some nice photo ops!
