Dunedin Peninsula

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Ian Warren » Sun Jul 23, 2006 10:34 am

Hi all

There was a photoreal file off the Dunedin area by David Williamson , about 22 mg file .
Best to have a read at Rob's Godzone forum , unfortunately the link for d/load is closed.
My thought is to get Steve'Codge" up to speed with autogen and he could release when completed .

Does this scenery include the city itself or just the Taieri Plains photoreal that was included in the Godzone magazine CD's?

Hi Warren,I finally made it here,thanks for everything you've done already.I was fortunate to have a long talk with Robin Corn on his teamspeak (I'll start chcking it often to see if your there)He mentioned you and Dunedin and that I should get in touch. As you know I would like to see a Dunedin scenery done which will have both airfields,the city and the Penninsula.Eventually filling in the gap between Invercargill and Timaru. I need a list of jobs really.Which programmes should I get familiar with? How and where do I start? I have the 20m&topo but of course the autogen is all wrong! Robin said he would do it eventually,can't say when but I'd like to either do it or help do it.Means what I do would have to work with everyone elses effort so I'd want to use a uniform method,obviously the same one as you and Robin use.I would be happy to contribute to a payware version and expect nothing more than a mention in the credits.You have 4-500 AGN files-Great,I have seen files with that name before but I don't know what they are or what to do with them. I am an interested person and a quick learner,honest,loyal and easy to get on with so any time you spend on me would be rewarded with some great sceneries! I have a good eye for thingsand know what looks right.I talked with Robin about the problems with FSX compatability and just how long things take to do! Whatever I do do has to work in FSX. I can see me spending considerable time on different landmarks,Larnachs' Castle,Glen Falloch gardens,the albatross centre even a top-dressing strip and opposite where hang-gliders and parapentes take off from. And that is all just a small area of the Penninsula! I've been reading bits here and there including Robins LOD article at Windowlight. I would definately want to include LOD's.I see maybe a base pack with updates as I get things done,even if it is a messy way of doing things,things do get released! There is such a great deal to see from the air in a relatively small area here it is a truly beautiful place and what I call NZ's best kept secret.Say if you post and email me a date and time to be on Robins teamspeak or whoevers,I haven't set up a server yet but I could,or phone me 03 4780353 to tell me to get on it,I much prefer talking to typing although it is good keyboard practice.

Ok, Codge, if you really want to get started on something, then these are a good beginning. Ian and I use different modelling methods, so I'll jump in here before he gets a chance...
If you like I can run you through modelling any one of these projects, using GMAX. The first steps will be:
Download the GMAX FS2004 SDK;
Install GMAX;
Do the SDK tutorial;
Read my GMAX tutorials;
Take a lot of photos.
If you ware interested then let me know. Maybe we can use Teamspeak for an intro to GMAX. Anyone else interested could sit in.

Great idea Robin,I'll get onto it in the morning.I see you are a bit of a night owl too.I don't usually stay up this late but 1am is about normal. If I leave my skype on I often get a ringing PC at 4,5,or6am from our European simmers.They will often phone or I suppose VOIP is the correct terminology just to introduce someone I havn't met yet.(I mean heard,I most likely never will meet them) They take great delight that we are on "zee udder side ov zee vorld".Dutch,Germans and Swiss mainly.I would love to get together on TS,I'm sure if you post a "GMAX lessons with Toprob would be very popular and appreciated ,just say when,alot of us have kids so after 8.30pm at night is preferable or any time Saturday daytime.Of course it's entirely up to you,that's just my ideal,I'll be there anytime if I know you're giving away trade secrets!Thanks for the list,a couple of days or so to digest it would be good before the TS session.

Trolly , thanx for cleanin up my screenshot errors .. 748 looks good Superb plane by Rick Piper and also freebie . Work on MC paints , good friend flew orginal into NZ from UK last century .. mm Bugger but REAL .. have all 3 diff paints off the older need to be posted .. Nice thing is they really suit NZscenery since 1968 .

The Dunedin Photo Area was a Freebie with no place to go , With mention off Author 'David Williamson' and BIG thanx to "Dave" and 'Codge's' Knowledge off area , will get file/scenery to to you to maybe use as showcase to devolpe new area , with help from friends and members then glue the area together .

After doing what Robin suggested(download files and study)I really like your idea Warren of a joint effort.It will just take too long to learn and produce something uploadable.I know there's no hurry,I for one will be sticking to 2004 for a long time yet.It will cost alot to run FSX properly,I will do my usual wait for the latest hardware we will all need to become affordable.There is a good file at flightsim.com in the hot files section called FSX Review,it is worth a listen.A year ago I knew nothing about computers at all.As I've said elseware in the forums a friend told me I could have a half decent simulator if I made the effort to learn a bit about the PC.Well a year later I have a pretty good setup by my standards,just shy of $3000 spent(now that was a shock,it was just a bit here and there I thought I never added it all up before till this moment!)Now MS wants me to spend another $1500 to have the sim at a level I can live with.I'd rather have a good FS9 than a crap FS10 is what I'm saying here.So I will learn and learn properly and I will produce some stuff I'll be proud of.I have learned a ton of stuff about the PC in the last year just so I could have a sim.In fact it is more like two ton! It reminds me of when another friend about 12 years ago was playing a guitar(rather well) and I said "you know I've always wanted to learn that". Well I started the very next day and it took 8hrs a day for 5yrs till that friend said "yeah you're fluent now".Now I'm not saying it is going to take me 5 solid years before I produce some decent scenery-I don't know,guys like you and Robin and Christian will have a better idea than me.I will get there,I know that much,I don't know when,and I know the more I learn about this the more I admire those of you who do it as only you know what it takes.Just know that if I don't post for a while I'll be learning scenery design.I'll always check in to keep up my moderators responibilities,but I may not post if I'm busy studying SDK's and whatnot.I won't have lost interest or anything like that.

Good idea Warren,knowing that it will get done at some stage and hasn't been forgotten,and that people are plodding behind the scenes is enough to keep me happy and interested for now.A change is as good as a holiday anyway and I don't mean a change away from FS but within FS.I want to get this rescue VA up and running and that means sceneries of car crashes and air crashes and all sorts to keep eveyone keen and not bored ever as there will be constant new situations.Not just flying the same routes over and over.Focusing on Helos but plenty of fixed wing too.

Warren,after your phone call I was looking at Robs' Avsim forum pg3,David Williamson clearly gives anyone permission to finish or add to what he started, did you miss that bit? The links to the file most certainly are dead,but what you seek is plainly there!

Ian Warren
Forgive me as new here and to Flightsim
Earlier in this topic you have a 748, I have trawled high and low to no avail.
can you tell me where to get that HS748 skin from and its base plane (ie file names).

Appreciate it
Moe
