Why would that be? Not all countries F-16s carry brake chutes most of them don't as the F-16 uses aerobraking to slow down.(minimum is 3000ft or 914m) Ohakea runway 15/33 is 7000ft long with a landing distance of 5000ft.

Ah it's an in-joke, you obviously don't have the RNZAF AI packagr for Ohakea.
The HTAI F-16 models have a penchant for landing and then rolling out over 8,000ft.

............next up the Saab Draken.
Sort of Sweden's equivalent to the Lightning but smaller and lighter but still damn fast and the wing platform has hints of the Vulcan (should of had a Danish one with the NATO - Cold War theme but I only had neutral Finnish and Austrian ones).

I could never figure out how the Swedes could support such a sophisticated aerospace industry.
Turns out they were given free access to the best technology that the US had on offer, in exchange for looking after the Polaris subs off the Swedish west coast...
Now General Motors owns SAAB.

I didnt know that about the subs.

GM own the Saab car company not the aerospace Saab check this out.. BAe did have a shareholding of Saab Group at one stage but I don't think this no longer the case. I am a big fan of the Gripen - cheapish, compact and versatile although no SU-27 beater.

Good link, thanks Paul.
Good thing for aerospace, SAAB cars has been bleeding red ink ever since GM arrived, $500m this year alone.
I think BAe brokered the South African export deal for Gripen.
You're right about it I reckon, it's another in the mould of the F-16 - small agile cheap and focussed, with plenty of room to grow.

Awesome lightning series Charl- that was another jet parked up at Hendon which I saw. I remember the pointy nose cone being very distinctive, but we didn't get to go inside that one.

Heck that is a BIG plane, wonder how the noise levels are internally with those many contra-rotating fans.
Great series Ian, loved the icy windscreen, quite authentic, I've seen it on approach to NZCH in a Convair

which scared me only after I thought about it a bit.

Cool series Ian - the Civvy Bear looks great - Charl had the Vigilante in mind for a series of shots smile.gif but have some others planned - I await yor shots with interest (off a carrier?) - also interesting shot of the CV-580.

Wow, I had no idea there were this many Cold War aircraft available for flightsim!

I only knew about Samdim's Antonov An-148, and that was it ohmy.gif so I'm finding this thread very interesting.

THE COLD WARS " BIG STICK" - The General Dynamics (Convair) B36 Peacemaker

Avro Lancaster had to be very heavy'lly modified so to carry 1X22.000 pound 'Gram Slam' bomb - the largest bomb operational bomb used at the end of WW2 , this aircraft had the abillity to carry 2 .. no modification .

looking at this , 6 X 3500 hp 28 cylinder-4 bank Pratt and Whitney Radials and 4 GE-J47 5.200lb Jets , u maybe can see why

The most armed bomber ever , protected 16 20mm cannons 6 turrets retract ohmy.gif

So of we go , sound is very unmistakable , another little trick was the carry a Fighter , The XF-85Goblin , failed .. as did 'FICON' using GRF-84 .

Hey Idea ! unsure.gif What if we make an aircraft NUCLEAR powered blink.gif

Indeed a B36 carried a reactor , not operational.... WOW , think few people then really were thinking proper ! biggrin.gif
So on with the airshow and the Peacemaker on its last flypast ,
