Dateline 1947, with the Luftwaffe tentatively established inland at their forward base at Hawera, the allied forces knew they needed to strike hard and fast if they were to keep New Zealand as a foothold in the Pacific. The invasion of Australia by Japanese forces and the ferocious fighting that ensued just over 11 months earlier, had allowed the German army to land forces and supplies at New Plymouth and drive inland relatively unopposed. Today our Spitfires strike hard and fast to begin pushing the German forces back into the ocean!
