Took most of Ohakea's runway to get off, too. Big Bomb onboard.

Prototype was lost when the tail broke off.
Another set a class record for subsonic bombers, by going supersonic from 46,000ft while in a flat spin.

Ladies and Gentleman , ,now on with the show, "Looking to your right" , The North American XB-70 Valkyrie , not the best airshow preformer .. very difficult in low energy curcuit keeping the aircraft well away from airport to display proper

Cockpit layout equals any 60s type and very complex due to being a test vechicle for devolpment

All radio chatter was kept out due the secrecy of this aircraft but we can show the complex gear retraction


Since this was a test , display was restricted to takeoff , as the aircraft cruised north


obviously broke a few NZ records , 68000 ft Marlborough in 17 mins

time to see the the last off the South Island for an hour-a-bit , 18 mins arrive NZAA @ 82,000 ft


Return leg was to test low level control over the Coromandel , bring the aircraft well below 25000 at times



below 40,000 always fly on autopilot above M1.55 , only a test plane , not a fighter .. time to go home

approach is kept wide , show is shut down on landing .. 210 knots @ 3000 , noise footprint is a consideration

finals , calling the numbers all the way ... good practice ..flight train in the space shuttle first least its quite!

Touchdown , more BUCK ROGERS than Cold War .. but fun ,
Later the B52 Stratofortress .. and special guess the B58 Hustler .

I tried that one once. I managed to get the engines started. A little hard considering the panel was authentically in Russian.

But the Western powerplant industry was streets ahead in the '70s.
F-111 carried 14 tonnes 2,000km and topped Mach 2.5
The Fencer was barely supersonic, and managed 600km with 3 tonnes of ordnance.



The Tornado also had good motors: it carried 9 tonnes over 1,400km, better than Mach 2.3
Surprisingly small, a good 5m shorter than the other two.
All still soldier on as post-Cold Warriors

woohoo - nice flying and shots Charl! - I didn't realise the SU-24 wasn't such a great performer.

There are some other 70 swingers out there - the F-14, Mig-23/27 & the Backfire. I'll have to hunt for some freeware models of these. The B-1 - well that was really the 80s and the Blackjack was even later.

The Cold War symbol maybe? The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress ..... NAH ! depends from which way you look at it

The stat's on this aircraft still keep being updated , last hull of the prodution line was in 1963 , over 100 still used as frontline bombers


Very little difference between the G and H model other than engine , biggest problem was to find a wide enough runway


able to carry 108 bombs 24 500lb pounders on wing pylons shown above in the designed role .

It was quite amazing to see a Fort quitely cruzin the Melbourne/Geelong beach front waitin for its display


Not aggressive , but just floating over the cities .

this also is part off the combat training flying nap of earth and hugging the terrain
