Well from the 6th floor of an office block in Wellington's CBD those were big quakes. I've been here five years and that had my blood pumping.

Still thought the best thing to do was hit the pub for a nice few pints of Guinness before heading home.

Now time to put the headphones on and lose myself in the Q400 for an hour...that was a long day!

Glad everyone's safe, could have been a lot worse.

We were stable on the Campbell plateau and connect to the Chatham Rise a lead heading slight NEE is the Kermadec trench the length off the country .. that trench is second only to the Marianas , the deepest in the Pacific and to the south rolls out to 2000 km south off Stewart Is .. just a wobbly in the middle but i guess if the old Chatham starts its on little jiggle and Napier/Hastings not joining the dance this will settle in quick time .

Good to hear things relatively ok. Were in Ohakune on a winter holiday and as a result of the quake there's a Level 1 Alert active now for Ruapehu. The missus is spooked

When you jam your wine carafe in a drawer to prevent spillage, it's getting serious. Of course I could always abstain... rolleyes.gif

No reports here in Oz of anyone hurt, which is what we all want to hear. Just a song to maybe ease the stress a bit:

Wife just read out to me off Stuff that 5 people have been hurt with only one still in Hospital in a stable condition.

I'm pretty sure that that alert has stood for a while now, noticed that a few weeks back while poking around on Geonet

Forgive me if you've read my facebook, but I find it funny that Wellington has claimed these quakes, despite them being closer to Marlborough. Glad to hear you are ok Doug. Not entirely sure if Deane is in BLN or WLG but sounds like he had been evacuated from wherever he is. Hang in there guys!

I was on the 6th floor of a 14 story building. Sure was a heck of a ride. First time I have ever been under a desk in a quake. We were under for about a minute as the building just kept swaying. All the previous shakes were fairly low key....but this one sure spooked me. Like most buildings in Wellington, all workers were sent home to allow inspections to be carried out. I flew home on my normal 6pm flight without issue. There sure has been a lot of aftershocks since, but we have not felt anything but the larger 4+ ones here in Blenheim (Renwick). I'm heading back to Welly tomorrow evening as building is still closed tomorrow.

Take care Deane , i dont envy you that 6th floor experience at all . I sometimes (most of the time) think about the quakes when on the stairs (outside) at work .... really get nervous when up on 17. Not really sure what i would do .... just ride it out i guess , not to many options.
