I can see NZ'ers or at least those that have a history with FS in Nz are more likely to buy the VLC, but most people outside of NZ, or outside of the history of NZ in FS will go Orbx. They have a bigger marketing budget, and you only have to see what they've done with Aussie, and also PNW to see the results of their marketing. I've bought all their colours of Aussie, and also PNW. I tried a couple of their airports, and well they just don't run well enough on my computer, so haven't bothered with them.

The AussieX stuff has been installed, and has been great for what has been released, and I think they've started on making one for the PNW.

So looking at NZ, I think it will go the same way, to be honest. Outside of this forum, is there much of a buzz for VLC? I can't say I've seen it mentioned anywhere else, yet there are already stirrings in a number of forums about the ORBx NZ.

I would find it really sad to see the NZ developers losing out over their own country, but I think it will be a hard decision for a few. I like what I've seen from VLC - even recognising Cramner Square in Christchurch (had to look to see if it was Latimer smile.gif ) but if I have to choose between an Orbx, and an NZx (like AussieX) or just a VLC, then I'm more likely to go Orbx, as it's not just the scenery, it's also the airports.

I haven't bought the Auckland, Wellington or a number of sceneries that are in NZ, especially not the FSX ones (I still fly primarily in fs9), but it's something I want to invest in in the future, when I have a computer to do these things justice, my computer is finally doing that in FS9.

At the end of the day, I think unless more people here about VLC, then people are going to know NZ in FS as Orbx.
When asked what I have contributed to on this earth my reply will be my daugther

The way I look at it all is very simple... FTX is designed in such a way that most other addons will NOT work with FTX Scenery. You only need to look at Australia, we no longer have any Freeware Designers or payware Designers anymore.. even Anthony Lynch have given up trying to make Scenery for Australia.

Then we look at FTX PNW... the same thing has happen and a very well known Designer had to get 28 sceneries he had made removed from websites like Flightsim.com & Avsim.com because they no longer worked with FTX PNW and he wasn't able to get them working so rather than try and give his users support that he couldn't give he just gave up.

Is this what we want with all the wonderful Designers and Scenery we already have for NZ ?? I think NOT !!

Cheers
Ian

Cool as dude ,you know i think its all just a bit of a laugh now when i look at the other posts ,if i was just a simmer id be over the moon to have so many choices on good scenery for NZ future ,though like Robin and yourself said im looking at it from a work related view/opinion and a old user of Orbx scenerys ..

as for the support of my future airports/addons ,i really cant say they would look/or work the same with FTX installed ,plus the objects i use are and would be custom to NZ to work in with Timmos VLC ,i guess ive made my decision ,be it make or break..

For sure man... smile.gif It seems to me that both VLC and FTX will probably be of interest to different markets.

Clearly VLC being homegrown, and a generally more realistic depiction of the NZ landscape, NZ simmers are perhaps going to prefer it over FTX.

And given the comments about FTX making unrealisticlly pretty scenery, I'd suggest that it will probably appeal to overseas simmers - perhaps those who have either never been here, or have had their memories of the "real" New Zealand washed out by the whole 100% Pure type of super-prettified marketing smile.gif

I suppose time will tell as to which is more commercially successful but given that, as I mentioned before, it's probable that VLC will be out before FTX (especially FTX North Is.), VLC will have a head start. I hope for their sake that the guys can take full advantage of hitting the market first too (assuming that they DO! biggrin.gif).

Timmo, will you be selling this on the major FS sites like the flightsimstore? This will defiantly help with getting the product out there, as opposed to selling it on way own site. Most FTX'ers use flightsimstore.com.au, so selling it there will most likely get the attention of them.

Yes we likely will but possibly not for the immediate release- The general idea is firstly to sell through Robins online store for a while and then gather some feedback etc as to what tweaks may be needed and add a bit more content. Then start a greater push into other markets from there (which can require a bit of $$ for advertising and marketing etc)

Being an Aussie I'll just throw my two cents in,

Before VOZ, flightsim scenery for Australia was almost non existent apart from a few single handed scenery makers, and freeware for N.Z. well forget it.
When FSX was released the same problem occured and to fly downunder was discusting.
The company over the ditch has done a magnificent job with scenery for Australia and before even thinking about N.Z they ran a poll with overwhelming results, and also from a lot of Kiwis.
Apart from Robin's work there hasn't been much joy for N.Z flightsimmers, so I can't see why you people aren't overjoyed by having two lots of scenery to eventually choose from for your country to sim in.
And as far as us Aussies not really knowing what N.Z looks like, I'm married to one and have seen probably more of N.Z than my own land, and the couple of Kiwis working with ORBX probably know what it looks like as well.

Buy whichever product you prefer, but stop bloody whinging about a damn good product in it's own right.
