Hmm , one in Wigram here , waiting for the call for the photos .. think i will be a goody love crawling through the cockpit , one down at the Ashburton aircraft museum which you can really get the feel for ... the bombadier position is a squeeze .. just show how much smaller people were in 1940/50s

MmmmmMr Warren, have it on good authority from a good mate of mine (ex RNZAF Sqn Leader), that the Canberra at Wigram is actually an Aussie one........damn Ockers..........

Yes it is and its a B-20 not a PR9 but of the 11 RZNAF canbrra that served between 1959-1970 two were trainers simlar the the RAAF .. NZ had the B12 variant and trainer the T13

My friend started out on Sunderlands, then Hastings, Bristol Frieghters, then C130's......its a long day walking through MOTAT with him....lol

Yeah , i have .. the wing of that Canberra sat outside control tower for years , they were up against a in 97 through to 2008 totally exposed , access panel and sort open .

But have you seen the rest of it .... inside the hanger ? When we catch up next , I'll get the keys and show you inside it . Maybe an RAF one , but its quite interesting inside.

it's always a great day when we get together and chew the fat (and an amber fluid or 2), I used to test the A14 and 15's that he was Flight 'E' on, so a lot comparing notes on egt, and performance etc.... just makes the day go quick.
But I will say that Wigram holds a special place for me.
Took my son down to CHCH to visit a cousin for his first flight when he was 6 and went to the museum.
No one was there and met up with one of the ex RNZAF gentlemen who look after the place.
When he found out I was an aircraft engineer, well that was it, a friend for life.
My son (and me), got to sit in the Canberra, look through the VIP Dak that Betty toured in, just a total gentleman and a wealth of knowledge, twas a good visit.
Had another friend who was a Sqn Leader and flew Sunderlands.
His 'claim to fame' was on his last day of service, he did a tour of the gulf in a Sunderland, and then proceeded to cut a very shallow furrow up the full legnth of Hosonville airfield with the kiel...... some said what skills.....some said the bloody idiot and he was lucky.
It's just awesome to talk with those that have 'been there'
Always remember when I was doing my PPL, we used to have 'pilots night' with a guest speaker, one happened to be Johny Houlton (I think thats how you spell it)
Apparently he had the honour of being the first of the allied fighter pilots to claim a kill on D-Day.
He had written a book about his experiances and how his original D-Day Spit had been restored to airworthy condition and how the BBC flew him and his wife to England to see it fly.
The guy was just amazing to listen too.

Phil , Johny Houlton is correct , I believe i have a colour photo off that very Sunderland , low past and the photo is taken by and given to me to past onto the Wigram Courtsey of a NZFF member NormNZ .... was not super low I'll dig the photo up and post .

yeah love to check it out ..i'm sure it is an old B12 , think recall the NZ no. markings on the wing as faded as they were .

Sorry photo caption reads final pass at Ohakea , Not quiet a Canberra but they were based .. on this day probably they maybe have been in Malaysia .

He was just amazing to listen too, a very humble, unasuming man who had lived through something that we can only image what it was like.
He also had a shy cheeky sense of humour.
When it came to question time, one of the guys asked if he had met Douglas Bader, his reply was yes, and the worse thing they ever did was give him arificial legs......

Now about that 'flyby' of the Sunderland, have eyewitness testimony that there was 'dirt distubance' of Hobby field.....and a place to plant tomatoes.....lol

They sure are Splitpin.
I have been fortunate that in my past to have met up with quite a few of them.
Once they know you have an interest you can just about see their enthusiasim to share their stories in their face.

Hi Neil , Welcome to the NZFF forum , ..... I was given the photo many years back and question were it was and labelled it from the information giving to me at the time , five back only and courtsey of another member .

Pleased you stopped and spotted you old work then , i have a series other others given to me in two batch's . 1958 , that makes it well before the Canberra debut then .

Matter off interest , are you a regular flight simmer .

No didn't - took one look at it and that was enough. There was a good Sunderland for FS2000 or FS2002 but that is history now.....
