Tower sim

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby towerguy » Sat May 03, 2008 1:50 am

Last week I had to go to Christchurch for two days of training for the new CatIII approaches and Fog operations in the tower simulator - sorry the photos are a bit blurry but they give you the idea.

the first 4 are of one of the the Auckland scenarios we worked through.

these next 3 are wellington views while we had a quick play round

and these are the control stations out in the back room

we did several exercises in fog both day and night and then did emergency scenarios on the second day. It was interesting to see just how much gets forgotten through under use.

Thanks for the pics.

Man that Total Control sim is just amazing. It's no wonder Animations Research and Airways won awards for it. I may be wrong but it looks like everything has a slight 'computer generated' look to it. I guess it would have to be that way, since they need to be able to apply algorithms such as fog and rain to it and still have it looking authentic. However, that only increases my admiration for the developers of that system. I can't even begin to imagine how much work would have been involved in setting it up.

Now if only they'd bottle it and sell a PC version! A few years ago I actually thought about writing a tower sim so we could have something that accurately models New Zealand, but after seeing this thing under development I gave up. I'm firmly against re-inventing wheels that much.
