Simply weird add ons

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

There are some add ons that just make you roll your eyes rolleyes.gif
I guess that these little FPS stealers will appeal to some.
But active forest fires...really?

Maybe we need to compile a list of FPS wasting add ons.

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

There are a number of air tankers out there for FS. Could be an interesting addition if you flew around North America a lot

Fire fighting Forrest fires would make a real good multiplay theme for about half a dozen good keen flyers thumbup1.gif

Just because you can't appreciate the work that goes into an addon, doesn't mean others shouldn't. You're free to ignore the addon if it's a waste to you. No one paid you to use it and there's no need to publicly bash it because you don't like it. Since you seem to know so much about what addons are good, why don't you code us something that's not a waste of FPS? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Who said I didn't appreciate the work that goes into it? Just because a lot of work goes into it doesn't make it good. The fact that I can't code doesn't disqualify me for stating my opinion on this add on or any others I consider to be FPS wasters. I think it might even be written in your constitution Brandon..the first amendment I believe.

Yup there are indeed a few tankers out there, personally my fire attack wing has Grumman Firecat and Turbo firecat, C-54, CL-215, Be-200, P-3A aerostar, Air Tractor AT-801 on floats, Martin Mars, Evergreen SuperTanker, P2V, F7F, there is a PB4Y privateer out there, numerous C-130 schemes,A-26 invader, C-119 and C-82, there is a PV-2 being worked on, at least a couple more i cant think of right now. Ive had fun flying around NZ dropping retardant on things.
Check out the Simulated Air Tanker Operations facebook page, and also you can find most of them on SOH or Flightsim dot com

I keep an eye on that SATO page on FB. Very cool and if I was interested in flying around North America I would be all over that. Very interested in air tankers though. Oh and Brandon, good way to make a first impression...

I'm sorry, but as someone who has worked a bit to learn C# in their free time over the past year or two, it just bugs me to see comments essentially calling an addon useless. Until one has developed an addon on their own (whether it be software or an aircraft itself), I guess it's not easy to understand how annoying it is to have a topic started about "FPS wasters" and have your addon called out as one of them by the OP. No, it's not my addon, but having coded/done other development work, I can understand what it must be like.

Let's throw out a good example here. The freeware Zlin Z142. I'm sure it's quite nice, but I'm not really interested in that particular type of aircraft. Does that make it an FPS waster?

My point is, just because you're not interested in it doesn't mean it's an FPS waster, nor does it deserve to be called out in such a thread.

On the topic of FSActiveFires itself, there's actually a lot of people out there that enjoy virtually flying fire fighting aircraft. It's quite far from a waste of anything. You say that "Just because a lot of work goes into it doesn't make it good." Have you tried it for yourself?

Eh, if it's to defend the freeware developers out there that put hours of work into what they do (and love what they do), doesn't make a difference to me. I'm also not new to flight sim. I just never post here.

I'll be completely honest, I know the developer of FSActiveFires. However, I promise you that he didn't ask me to reply here. Heck, I had already started writing my response before even reading his thoughts as to not be influenced by his opinions.

Well I will admit that I had not considered the fact that there are those who are perhaps into virtual fire fighting and this may have appeal for them (even if the fire probably never goes out). Not quite sure how the Zlin can be compared to a forest fire program however.
I guess that FPS and VAS usage are becoming challenging with more complex aircraft and scenery add ons and this doesn't really help in this regard. It is a bit like the argument of modelling the inside of airport terminals and elaborate airliner interiors. It looks great initially but after it has been seen once or twice the novelty wears off but the draw calls and FPS, and VAS hit still remain.
Actually I did not realise that this was a freeware development as I am quite supportive of these developers. Apart from their generosity you have to start coding somewhere and this could lead on to bigger and better things.

I had a good example, this on release of the Nemeth CH-54, the release happened in between MS Service packs 1 and 2, explained the procedures for the starting and every thing was correct.

I then went on to say ... It pops ... It farts ... and then it poohs itself, obviously released without the knowledge of the service packs because a patch was released and was incorporated into the further helicopter releases fixing the issue.

One remark in a very pompous letter writing then reply on the forum - "Oooh ! I don't like the they this fellow speaks about his bodily functions" .... my exact reply was "Lighten up its a joke" rolleyes.gif
