Got it! The detail is fantastic!

I've only had a short play with it, but the sound ... doesn't sound anything like a Merlin <??>. Certainly doesn't sound anything like the NZ Warbirds P-51D (ZK-TAF). See this video.

A little adjustment to the 'sound Cfg' is required , the whistle sound is cause by the gun ports apparently more pronounced on the the UK warbards for some reason ,

In your Cfg go down to //Wind Sounds
[WIND_SOUND]
filename=p51D_wind ............ change the line to filename=p51D_wind_bak thumbup1.gif

Whatever it is, it's probably authentic. John Terrell is meticulous with his whole 'Spamcan' series.

The gun ports (muzzles) would possibly be left open and do carry gun were as i sure GBs has guns removed and dumby barrels (plugs) in place causing a much lessor whistle .. it still there but not as pronounce as what appear,s the UK/US airshow circuit aircraft .

I was dubious too but I saw a Youtube video the other day of a Mustang at a airshow in the UK which sounded exactly like the Warbirdsim P-51...if I find it I will post it here.

I appreciate that he'll be fanatical when it comes to detail (our benefit!) ... I'm just wondering whether the model is using the correct engine+sound set <??>.

I know the "whistling" is a bit of a nuisance, but that's not part of the engine sound. That engine doesn't sound like a Merlin to me. I've watched the NZ Warbirds one a good few times in RL and it sounds totally different. THe WBS one sounds (I hate to say it) like a souped up sewing machine (gasp!!) ... and has none of the unmistakeable deep throaty sounds of the Merlins that we know and love.

I was reading the forums the other day over at A2A and they have being investigating this sound phenomenum and they seem to think it is not coming from the gun ports but from the rear radiator behind the bulge and only at certain attitudes. They and other so called experts say that they have seen the same mustangs flyby creating this whine sometimes and other times not. I have watched a few videos and there theory seems to stand up.

I propose a group observation and report back just for fun. Watch as many mustang flybuys as you can, When you here a whine, see if you can see that the radiator cowl is open a little and check to see that when the whine comes on, what the plane is doing at the time. eg flying straight and level or climbing or turning. The suspicion is that when the pilot pours on the G's that the radiator intake is exposed to extra rammed air and that this extra airfow may cause the whine. the reason that some planes seem to do it all the time is that maybe pilots tend to do the same manouvers at every airshow because every pilots flying style differs and that they repeat those manouvers where ever they go.

This may sound crazy but seems to be what the guys over at A2A seem to be thinking and those guys do their research well.
