boeing 737 800 - cruising

Hi, I cannot get a 737 to cruise above 360 Kn[62percent NI] without 'overspeed' rearing its ugly head! all literature says it can cruise at 477 Kn. I can't figure it. Also how in heaven [or somewhere else do you close down the engines, cheers!!![ FSX delux]

What altitude?

That will be IAS not TAS I'm thinking....

Hmmmm - at that alt it is unlikely to be the reason!!

More of a prop man myself so not so familiar with the 737 800 panel/start-up/down procedures but suggest you cycle through cockpit views until you bring up throttle/fuel management - turn off fuel pumps and shut down generators...

Yeh, I've done that. I'll probably have to just go home leave them going and let the next pilot worry about. Might get the sack though!

Hold it!! I've found the toggles that switch off, hidden under the main throttles. cheers & thanks for your attention !!

For the speed thing, im guessing they are talking about TAS, and not IAS.

But to shut down your engine. You need to look at the throttle quadrant. And under the throttles, you will find the Fuel Cut Off switch, im no expert with turbines, but that works for me.


[EDIT] That is pointing to the thing under the throttle, not the throttle its self.

Your IAS will not rise much above that. As you climb, note your Mach Number, TAS and GS, they will all be increasing. You will not be able to fly as fast (across the ground) at low level due to the denser air.

Hi,

The differences between a piston engine and a turbine always used to confuse me too !!!

The way it was explained to me was kinda like this.

A piston aircraft engine always requires a source of ignition ( ie spark plugs) to sustain running.
So to shut it down just turn off the ignition.

A turbine uses "igniters" a bit like sparkies, to light up the engine, but once running, combustion is
self sustaining, and the igniters can be turned off.

So the only way to stop the thing is to shut off the fuel supply.

So thats why I could never find an ignition key in my 737 ???? sad.gif

250 knots below 10,000 is pretty standard.

The VNO/MMO will increase with altitude, so 470 knots is cruise true airspeed in the 30's.
VNO below 10,000 is more likely to be around 340 knots, our esteemed colleagues can confirm the exact speed.
