Virtual Air New Zealand

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby ronindanbo » Mon Oct 30, 2006 7:42 am

I seem to remember there was a topic here abouts where some individuals were toying with reviving Virtual Air New Zealand, did this come to anything?

Somebody mentioned it had quietly died, the way these things tend to.

I recently spoke to the guy, 'Ben' on IVAO who was meant to be reviving VANZ.

He was trying to get the admin rights to this forum off me, but when I didn't let him, he got all upset

He didn't mention anything about VANZ...

I've sent a PM to the webmaster through the vANZ forums (yesterday ;) ). I'd give it a few days, maybe a week, if he makes a post on the forums but doesn't reply to my PM, I'll post it on the forums proper. ;)

The guy you want is Aaron Martin and when I talk to him next on MSN I will try and ask him for you.
Theres a lot of talkers about what should be done but not a lot of doers, seems to be anyone can create a Forum but when it comes down to looking after a VA people "Think" they are going to get a easy run for FREE.
You want to run a VA you need to be prepared to spend time and/or Money to do so for very little thanks.
As for people trying to claim admin rights etc...Tell them to get a life. I had my work stolen and blowed if I will give a individual a chance in the future to steal it. You want it then RESPECT the person who created it.

Well, over the last month, about 5 guys have offered to help, through the vANZ forums, as of yet there has been no reply about it from Aaron.

And yes, I agree with Trolly's actions with Ben, he contacted me and asked me to try and persuade Trolly to hand over the rights to him, to fob him off I said I might bring it up sometime (bollocks of course :P ).

It's shame VANZ is stagnant, BUT why not look to Virtual Pilots Association?

You can fly the Kiwi flag there amongst many of us proud downunder-ites (Alister, Alex, Chris J, Chris D and Jimmy are amongst the 11 Kiwis there), fly anything, anywhere, online or offline, access state of the art flight planning, weather, and route information, have a logbook with all your flights registered, fly missions (Alister's the mission creator) and even meet others from all over the world.

There's an entrance exam, but if newbies to FS like me at the time can pass it, anyone with a knowledge of flight sim should be comfortable with it.

Take a look-see

Does anyone here know anything about setting up php and mysql databases?
I've been toying with the idea of setting up a new virtual air nz for a while. Then, I came across this which can do all the hard work for me. I just have NO idea how to turn it on and get it working. New Zealand has SO many simmers, and yet no decent virtual national airline for them to fly. Don't get me wrong, I love VPA, but I'd like NZ to have a decent VANZ.
If anyone could figure out how to upload this to a website (i'm no good at this sort of thing, I've been trying a couple of days now)

http://www.vadmin2.airframe.org.uk/index.html

I'd buy webspace, a web address, and get it all set up and running with new webpages ( i can do html lol) and keep the schedules updated. I just can't understand the stuff that you 'download' and the instructions for installation seem to be offline at the moment :(

Nah, I've tried that :(
I've managed to turn on the mysql database, but I when I uploaded the php stuff it said "unable to find database" and that's it. No webpage..

I'm reading the phpnuke tutorial now. Perhaps I need to upload that first.

Hi all,

Yes I admit Virtual Air New Zealand is pretty stagnant at the moment, has been for quite some time. I anticipate that the release of FSX will probably stir up some interest, just as FS2004 did.

Although I own the virtualairnz.org.nz domain name, I always considered that Owen was the 'owner' of VANZ, as he started it, and I joined later. I merely purchased the domain as Owen didnt have the budget, and I spent way too much time coding the current website, along with the windows based VANZ Flight Control Centre Software.

After a few years of doing all the coding myself, the Real World started to get in the way, and also, I started flight training in real life, which quickly took away my spare time, and also motivation to spend much time on flight sim, and associated websites.

Several people over the last year have offered to help with the coding, but as yet no one has had the know-how to do so. I gave one person access to the code 2 years ago, only to spend more time fixing his mistakes, and then finding copies of my code on other peoples websites!

Just recently I have received updated schedule information thanks to Ian, and plan on importing them into the database soon.

I dont think that www.virtualairnz.org.nz needs a new website. I think we just need some motivation, direction and leadership. I am a computer geek, I leave the management to someone else! I have been waiting for someone to step forward in the VANZ forums, with support from others, but as yet no takers.

Hopefully someone will step up soon, I would hate to see VANZ wither and die.
Aaron

Hi Aaron! It's good to hear you are still hoping for a bright future for VANZ.
I wish I could help you. But I can't even upload a precooked virtual airline system lol

I always look back fondly on those early vanz days. It's just a shame the down time dragged on so long. I've been gone nearly a year and half and the down turn started well before then.
Still, perhaps VANZ can have a bright future if you can get some help. There are so many kiwi simmers, it'd be great to have a good VANZ for them. You never know who you might get back on board if things pick up!

I'll scrap my idea then. No use trying to fill a gap that might be (re)filled. Best of luck.

Hi Guys,

A little harsh on the comments above particularly on the administrators hand, anyway I have semi designed and completed the new VANZ website and i'm just in the process of completing the PIREP SYSTEM, but I have not had time to upload it.. due to exams etc and study. Once the website is uploaded, it should be fairly maintainance free.. apart from the flight plan checks.

Also if someone is prepared to give me a hand with the pirep system, that would be great.

Cheers Ben

Juist a little question: why do you have two IVAO sigs?

with whatever vanz gets going instead of making its own fourm why not just have anothor topic on the nzff? that way itd proabably get more traffic and be far more active and good advertising for the VA?Itd be better than just haveing one of those empty fourms that there are many of around. Just a thought....

I agree, I'd rather have one virtual version of Air New Zealand, rather than two...
