I think the first was a Chippie in the early 80s at Dairy Flat followed by a Harvard , from there i believe Trevor Bland brought in the first real fighter the P51 , saw that first time in CHCH in 1985/6

OK , this question is for the real historian s , .. We in New Zealand have the only exsiting VICKERS VILDEBEEST airframe in the world

Two mishaps with the type , crashing in todays well known areas in Christchurch .
The Question is , what suburbs did they crash-land in ? .

Is this it? i'm guessing really...

NZ103. Shipped to New Zealand in March 1935 on "Rangitata". Arrived Auckland 20 April and barged to Hobsonville for assembly. Code B-9. Force landed in Canal Reserve, Christchurch on 06 February 1940. Badly damaged and withdrawn from use. Converted to INST117 at Hobsonville.

Cool photo! NZ105 Parts of this aircraft are believed to be in storage with RNZAF Museum, Wigram.

Vickers Vildebeest is such an awesome part of our kiwi history! How our boys managed with these and Buffalos while the Japanese had their superior Zero's in such big numbers, shows how great the adversity and bravery that our men faced and showed in those times.

Also if you check the records you will see a large number of New Zealand Vildebeest's main cause of crash was stalling problems.

and NZ108 (Ian's picture) was force landed into a river and written off on the 23 May 1940.

now cross my fingers and wait! drool.gif drool.gif

smile.gif KBG - It crashed in field opposite Heathcote esturary or known as Canal Reserve, Christchurch on 06 February 1940.

Figured that would be the easy one - there is another ?

Paul , "NZ105 Parts of this aircraft are believed to be in storage with RNZAF Museum, Wigram." I'm sure if it is the same airframe number/registration , this is well into it restoration , the biggest problem is they dont have plans for it and only working on it from the old parts , photos and any information found by people like us . The tubular fuselage has been repaired and they have an engine for it , other details are just so hard to come by .

QUOTE
Who am i...
Geoffrey Bryson Fisken DFC (born February 17, 1916), was a New Zealand fighter pilot, and the British Commonwealth’s leading air ace in the Pacific theatre of World War II.

QUOTE
...and what am i famous for?
Whilst he was in 67 Squadron with the RAF, defending Singapore from the Japs:

On January 12, 1942, Fisken claimed his first victory, a Ki-27. He claimed a Mitsubishi Zero on January 14, being lucky to land after being caught in the explosion of the Japanese plane. (Allied pilots during this period tended to refer to all Japanese fighters as Zeroes; this aircraft was probably an a Nakajima Ki-43 "Oscar", as used by the IJAAF.) On January 17, he shot down, or assisted in the destruction of, three Mitsubishi G3M bombers, and four days later brought down another fighter.

By this time, 243 Squadron had lost the majority of its pilots and virtually all its aircraft and was amalgamated with the Australian No. 453 Squadron RAAF, which continued to operate, along with No. 488 Squadron RNZAF. Fisken claimed another fighter on February 1. Five days later, he was "bounced" by two Japanese fighters. He nevertheless shot one down, but only narrowly escaped the other, being injured in the arm and leg by a cannon shell before the dogfight ended. He was evacuated to New Zealand shortly before from Singapore fell.

Give me the registration of the aircraft that this rudder photograph depicts.
