A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Haha, usually id land at about 140 in a 738, hitting at about 300 fpm, when i was new id come in at 250! so dont do that, id recommend approaching at 175 and entering the runway at 155 @ 150ft, thats my estimate, im not a pro pilot though, about 4 years experience.

Approaching at 175? Dont Think so..Thats way over the max Flap limit anyways.

If your VREF Is around 130 knots, approach at Maxiumum 140- But anywhere around that is fine.

Is it right that you're supposed to cross the threshold at 50 feet, even in a big aircraft like a 737? I know that's right for lighties...

It's probably something like that, as the descent rate is similar (mostly).

All depends on what sort of landing you are doing. The whole 50ft across the threshold is a set figure used in calculating aircraft performance e.g. landing graphs for GA etc. Reality is unless you are crazy you just get the aircraft on the ground as soon as you can without using the starter extensions etc...

Oh and most larger aircraft don't fly to a certain descent rate on the landing, its typically a set angle of attack and KIAS (Vref - the one the FMC spits out).

Yeah that's what I've been taught, correct descent rate is what you get with the correct power setting and speed (nose attitude)

Just to Confirm Leon- VREF Is actually the landing speed, not the approach speed- Which could be 5-10 knots more depending on wind and other factors.

In the PIC 737 I make the app at 150 and touchdown at 120-125 give or take.
Those numbers were given to me by my Dad a 737 rated pilot...

Edit: My Dad just admited he wasent paying much atention to me when I asked him these speeds
So touchdown should be 125-130 give or take.
