..reminds me of my experiences in the City of London (England), and the surrounding area, during the German blitz in the 1940's.

(We finally had to evacuate to the Countryside (Herefordshire) to avoid the horrendous bombing).

Absolute devastation!

As a 7.1 Magnitude Quake (the largest for a Century), I am surprised that there were no early warnings showing up on local Seismographs, etc, especially as New Zealand lies in a an active Earthquake/Volcanic region?

It looks as though conventional, brick-built buildings suffered the most...not a lot holding the bricks together!

Good to hear there are very few causalities so far.

You mean for the printers? That is 469 Colombo street (google maps has street view which shows what it looked like before it fell down)

Cheers Ian....Im fine, take more than an earthquake to get rid of me. House was a real mess inside...glass, pot plants, hot water tank sprang a leak, stuff falling off the walls... but no one hurt thank God.
My parents lost their chimney, fell away from the house and not through the roof...they are both in their late 70's (mums birthday today) and they are pretty shaken up...but ok.
Power went off at the start of the quake, then the water all but stopped...both back to normal at about 1.30 this arvo i think.

Scary stuff, thanks for your thoughts I hope everyone else is ok too.......

Hey Marty - glad to hear that you and your folks are unharmed. Must be a bugger cleaning up after a decent shake - I dread the day we have our next one in Napier that has me doing the big cleanup. I was interested to see in the photos on the 'net that there didn't seem to be a lot of broken windows - is that a wrong impression? Did you or your neighbours have any windows broken? And how did your electronic gear in the house fare - lose anything or have anything damaged (I'm thinking sharp object thru LCD)?

From what Ive seen, quite a few shop windows on the main street broke....funny you should mention that...about 5 mins ago, one of the kitchen windows cracked from side to side..but there was no quake....maybe the old place just moved by itself....kinda spooky.
Re electronics, everything made it through....the router for the internet ended up on the floor,and one flatmate had his mouse killed by a falling clock (never thought of killing mice with a clock) BUT....other than that...we are all up and running

Thanks for the info...its interesting how shallow these things are and all on a minor fault line......i was reading earlier, that this one (main event) has got the earthquake watchers really excited...Im so bloody happy for them

Andy , 1.05 and we just had another good jolt ! that required me grabbing the 26" LCD

I note from the GeoNet website that there have been just over 30 quakes since 10:38 last night, ranging from the low 3's thru to a 5.1. If anything, the jolts seem to be increasing a bit on average over the last 15-odd. Obviously the main quake loosened things up quite a bit.

Yep I am so over it as well, we where lucky not much broken in the house, one wall on the old brick garage is on a bit of a lean - hopefully a new garage have not gone and looked in the man cave yet so don't know whats working out there, did see me projector and 2 LCD monitors on the ground tho . good thing is tho I think we have added a bot more land for free to the ten acres tho

Fortunate the typical N/West blow did not happen or least was calm through the city , on a norm this time off the year with this type of weather comes a Southerly and that after the warm affect N/W comes with rain and could come with a powerful cold front .
