Oooh dear. The major part of my life was spent down south, but my formative years (up to my late teens) were in Chapeltown/Leeds, so I'm afraid to say that makes us *sworn enemies*. I'll never lose my "northern" attitudes (or my "northern" sense of humour) so I suppose we just bury the hatchet and join forces against those posh snobs down south

Apologies to everyone. If you're not 100% clear what I'm wittering on about, Google "Wars of the Roses"![]()

I should be neutral in this dispute (West Midlands/Staffordshire border) but as I lived in York for 3 years at university, I fear the onslaught from the wrong side of the Pennines....
Seriously, welcome Simon! This is a great friendly and helpful community. You'll find a few of us from the UK on here. NZ simming is the marriage for me of two of my greatest loves, aviation and New Zealand. I spend a month each year in NZ, visiting friends and touring. Over the last 11 years, I've been over 7 times, with an 8th in the planning. I'm so well travelled in NZ I'm almost considered a local. You should definitely try to get over for a visit to your family. There's a great airshow (Wings Over Wairarapa) based in Masterton and Wellington and the aviation museum at Omaka would also be in easy reach.
Take care, happy landings.

Very possibly Ian. It would certainly be on my itinerary, in fact I intended to come back last year but the quake aftermath put paid to that. I didn't want to see Christchurch in that condition. As it turned out, the change of plan was just as well as I flew into Blenheim as that polar storm was hitting back in August and all flights to Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown were cancelled! I think I was in the only part of the South Island to have brilliant sun and no sign of snow all the way through that.
It would be great to catch up with some of you fellows down there. I haven't been to the museum at Wigram yet. We could have a jolly boys' outing!
Hopefully if plans come together I'll be back over throughout August. I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,

I'm sure we can get many NZFF members in on this , a great venue meeting spot Wigram Museum would be for all to come far and wide . A Jolly boys outing indeed !

I went to a couple of meets in Holland (for Su27 Flanker). A short hop over from the UK (in those days). Amazingly, people came from as far away as Canada and Israel!!! They weren't *huge* events (as meets go), but incredibly friendly - and great fun. It was a much smaller "community" in those days.
