FS9-FSX

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Ian Warren » Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:24 pm

I love FSX .. but there are models and subjects that just dont work so smooth . Scenery , yea still working on it .. taking a long break , My original motto was 'To many GREAT aircraft models out there but not enough scenery to land it in ' this was pre any freeware Christchurch scenery and the beginning of GODZONE scenery to the now world rated REALNZ Scenery . With so many teachers and devolpers now on line who can help and create , exactly what Robin Corn mentioned so many years back getting a community of dedicated and super talented peoples , me i was just a plane nutter but wanted real airports .... but with 'can of worms' opened .. ive looked back or just simply have fun with both FS9-FSX and :o still love FS9 ...
My first payware , the Alphasim C141 Starlifter

this model is so old , ya really need to blow the cobwebs off ........ sometimes over the months ... she'll make an appearance .. but not the way i wanted her to look

on a pc that runs FSX ....FSNiners - ya in for a treat! :)

Over Robins Original CHCH/Canterbury scenery

Turning to approach 02 NZCH - the Ci41 has be getting a cut in copy paint job to create the way they looked when first operating in NZ

more old FS9 .. :o

Heading over Tempelton primary school on southerly approach to NZCH - Kids there want a Starlifter SAVED due to amount of times it flew out and over there school !

FS9 is still in my books , although FSX now well over a year old requires a more update PC ... we all can't go running of to the shop and buy
and for those who really want the top end FS9 747 - Ready for Pushback - VMAX747-200 series - THIS WAS PAYWARE !

Air New Zealand skin requires a small cheat line edit and alpha channel fix ,

FS9-FSX both :plane:

Nice one Ian - how about some pics of that Cloud 9 Phantom again?

The reason I havent switched to FSX is:

- too many payware addons I have for FS9 that I havent fully explored yet

- not sure whether my PC can handle FSX

- not enough room on my HD for both to experiment with FSX whilst still keeping FS9

- dont like the desert textures

- I was a late starter to FS9 anyway - that how its always going for subsequent FS iterations for me - then I can save on hardware costs, more addons would of appeared by the time I switch and the bugs would of been ironed out (hopefully).

Goodonya Ian, I'll post a couple of FSX zingers just to put you in your place! :D .
Great shots those, can't believe how old-fashioned the Starlifter looks today, those funny tubes hanging off the wings...
Bring on the C9 Phantom, real beast.

Charl ,The Starlifter ive crawl all over this aircraft many times .... the one that really sold me on the aircraft was 1995 , USN/USAF open day out at Christchurch Intl Deep Freeze ramp .. I was asking about inflight refuelling during the 1991-92 Gulf War , the Captain said i'd have to ask the plane commander she did 3 missions in the Gulf , a tap on the shoulder see turns around and  ..ooooooo   WOW i'm still in love with the girl - No no , I mean the plane today , had a good friend with me reacons I dropped to me knees ... still cant remember all she said  she did inflight refuel on all missions with the 141 ... STACY ... Meg Ryan had nothing on this .... hang on ...Starlifters :D yeah great plane

well having fsx installed for over a week, and flying it all the time, i have made a choice to go back to fs2004 (i missed my fspassengers far to much) so i am keeping fsx on so i can do reviews and such. so for the time being you guys will keep getting screenshot and competition entries form either of the two (i think i will keep which one the shots are from to myself, just to keep you on your toes). i am in the process of building a new computer, so once that is up and runnning, fspassengersx will hopefully be released and there will be no looking back,,,,, again huh.gif

There is nothing Wrong with both FSX , Brilliant , FS9 , Brilliant ... for those who may think your missing out , could i best answer the question .. not sure , only way i show is to see it , I could turn my back on the older FS .. but with a system that runs FSX .... guess what FS9 looks like smile.gif

I think it is simply to do with how often the average user replaces/upgrades their computer.....This is probably about the same duration as the releases of Flightsim (i.e. every 3/4 years) but of course may be out of phase with each other.

I happened to buy a new computer about the time that FSX came out (or just before it did) so I was in a position to buy and run FSX from the start. I think if I had bought a new computer midway through FS9 (i.e. 2005/2006) I would still be playing FS9- I would be stuck between the two releases with a computer that ran Fs9 really well but didnt quite have the grunt to run FSX well.
My computer certainly isnt a screamer- An old single core, mid range graphics card and 2gb RAM....Sometimes I dont understand when people with far gruntier machines complain about performance?...maybe I have lower standards but 20-35 fps is fine for me.

In saying that, I rarely actually FLY flight simulator....most of my time is spent in Photoshop, Sketchup, Gmax, Annotator, bglcomp, FSXPlanner, resample, Whisplacer etc with a quick check in the sim to see how it turned out!

Timmo you hit the nail right on the head when you stated that people with far gruntier machines are having problems. When FSX first came out I built a new machine to run it.While not the heavy duty machine that others are running,I none the less get very acceptable performance on it.Now guys don't laugh at these specs when you read them,Ashton has been at my place and seen FSX runnning so he will be able to back up what I say.

CPU: E6400 2.13 GB Dual Core
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3
Graphics Card: Win Fast PX7600 256MB PCI Express 16x
Memory: 2GB@533
Power Supply:450Watt

I Invite you all to check up on the specs for the motherboard, you will find that with the current chipset that it has installed in it that of the 2.13 Gig CPU,the motherboard will only see 1.6GB.Oh hell yes you have read it right. Also, because I brought this board very early on,I now realise that I should of got the S2 version.nonetheless It performs in an outstanding manner.I do not get single figure FPS.My normal FPS is between 30-75 FPS.One Idiot on another forum stated that to run FSX A minimum of 512MB graphics card was needed,He is wrong.FSX is a completly different bird to fly.Forget about The way you fly FS9 when going into FSX.If you slam all your sliders to the right,as in FS9 then read my lips,IT WILL GO SLOW and performance will suffer.A word about the desert textures in NZ.I have brought a program called FScene4x that makes all of NZ green,no more desert, another program that I brought was XGraphics which allows you to change the clouds, sky, water and a host of other things that really bring FSX to be the kind of sim that I like.Another thing That I did was to follow the advice of NickN on Avsim,on the way to set XP up for FSX,as well as the correct way to load in FSX.For those having dual core CPU's,with XP I also installed SP3 for XP,because SP3 will see both cores. When installing FSX there is a correct way to do it and NickN tells you how this should be done.I haven't posted links because I don't know the legality of doing so but do a search on the Avsim forum and you will find it.Just follow his advice and you won't go wrong. As far as tweaks in FSX go,forget all Tweaks Prior to FSX SP2,except for one.Just add in This one into your FSX config file:
[BUFFERPOOLS]
Poolsize=5000000

The 5000000 can be increased to 10,000,000, just adjust it untill you find the sweet spot.

for me,FSX is the sim of choice, because this time I got in early whereas with FS9 I came in at its finish,FSX will run on a variety of platforms which today can be built up quite cheaply, naturaly the more money spent on a computer the more chance it will have of running better.AM I happy with FSX,you bet I am.
