gsnde (Martin Gossmann) - featured March 2021

It happened when I bought my first 8086 XT computer with Microsoft Flight Simulator 3 in the 80s. I was hooked, and while in phases in my life flight simulation did play no significant or hardly any role, I always came back to it.

It became serious when I joined MAIW in 2007. The funny thing is that I was never very much one for flying. What I love is working on airports and with AI to realize the screen shots I see in my mind.

Being a military brat, I moved about every 4 years until the age of 16. Then my family settled in the South of Germany, where I finished school and studied politics and German literature. I met my wife again – we already had a time together while both still at school – and we are the happiest couple ever since.

I ventured into journalism for some years, which was a great experience and taught me a lot about this profession and IT – it was the time when ISDN was brand new and stunning. Compuserve was the social media platform, and getting a driver update via modem from some US board was exciting, troublesome, and awfully expensive.

We - a group of friends - founded a press agency focusing on the Near- and Middle East. I believe we were good in our work, but nobody ever told us that you must understand how business works to survive. Too proud to consider things like advertising and compromises, we were successful, but financially broken after some years. Papers pay per word, which is not very much. I changed into IT, and today I am heading the country IT of a large logistics company.

Sometime over the years I found this forum and was immediately taken by the friendliness and characters of Charl, Marty and Ian, who were the first to welcome me. Since then, I keep coming back and tell what is going on in the AI world and share photos from flight shows I have visited.

I believe that whoever created this world was at its best when he made Ireland, Switzerland, and New Zealand. I am positive about the first two countries, and the first thing I will do after retirement is an extensive trip with my wife through your wonderful country. I am sure it will exceed our highest expectations.

Hey Martin. Great bio mate thanks for sharing. Super interesting to hear about your Journalism period, I bet those were great times, despite the finances.

Compuserve ay, that brings back memories, can still remember my user ID/number (I think)

I am a long time MAIW user too so am very grateful for that work from you guys. Awesome to see military airfields come to life like that.

Great to see you pop up here, Martin!
As a longtime AI supporter it's always great to see you drop by with news of your latest excellent renditions.
Keep stopping in, and yes, when we are shot of this little bug - certainly make the journey to Godzone!

Compuserve??? Pah!!! I can beat that ... I used to frequent BBS's on Fidonet ... where you dialled into the server (usually in a similarly afflicted person's living room) directly via modem. It was oh-so-polite and genteel back in those days!

Thanks for the bio, Martin - it's always a pleasure to read about NZFF members in RL!

Many thanks for your nice comments

Compuserve was really the best to have at that time. It was so overwhelming when you were coming from BBS, exactly like Adam says. And Zyxel was the hottest hardware you could get - 14400 instead of 9600 bps was lightning fast. By the way... AOL was when it started to move in the wrong direction, right? :P

May I ask for a correction of my last name, please? That would be Gossmann (no ‚r‘, but 2 x ‚n‘).

I take the chance for some AI news. After more than a year our legacy AI conversion project is nearing the end. I do not even have to scroll the list of unconverted aircraft anymore. One of the last releases was Mike Pearsons‘s Centrury Fighter Series.

When we are really through I will publish a list here of what has been converted by whom. The conversion team was absolutely amazing, and aside from their technical skills they are ultimately brave. 170 packages have been done by now, with partly insane amounts of models included.

I am really looking forward to visit your place. I will make sure to tell you in advance, with the hope to get the chance to drop in on some of you. B-)

Any plans for AI in MSFS 2020?

Well, yet MSFS 2020 AI is hardly in an experimental state. There are no helis, effects are a hard thing as well. From that perspective we did not look into it. I bought it, checked it out shortly, and then removed it again for the time being.

I expect that it will take into next year until this simulator will start offering serious AI. Which is a good thing, because when the last AI package is converted - and we only convert newly made FS9 packages as business as usual - I need at least 9 month without any large scale hobby project :D

But one thing is for sure. When it is worth it to start the MSFS conversion project, we will do it.
