FedEx phishing scam ?

Postby emfrat » Tue Mar 10, 2020 5:01 pm

Just had a call to my mobile, apparently originating in NZ. I only have two contacts in NZ and it wasn't either of them. So as usual with 'Unknown Callers' I let it ring out and then checked the number on the 'Net. Surprise, surprise, it wasn't an NZ number - too many digits - but when I changed the +64 to 064 it took me to a Fedex Tracking page which said it could not find that tracking number. So I looked up 'Fedex tracking scam' and found there are many variants of a scam which imitates Fedex and tries to get (at least) your personal info. I have now added the number to my Mr Number app block list, so next time they call, Mr Number will pick up and immediately hang up, and let me know it has done so. I like that .
Mind how you go :wink2:

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

I ordered a copy of Sony Vegas a few years ago, online.
Foolishly did not look properly, and turns out it shipped from Germany!
This was in the early days of public awareness that goods often came into the country without GST etc.

Got a call from DHL locally to say the parcel was impounded in Customs, and pay up or else.
An email followed, quite aggressive, to say they could only hold the parcel for 48 hours, transfer funds to this account.
I paid them, and wondered how Customs managed to get them to do the billing, and also how they managed to virtually equal the purchase price.

The parcel duly arrived, and I was probably too happy to think more of it.
But I do sometimes wonder if some clever feller didn't park himself outside his day job, and run a scam on incoming stuff.
If so, it was really well done.
Ya do have to be neurotic I believe...
