Spent the day re-installing stuff on the new system. Here's a screenshot just to show that it works. (click through to 1920x1080)

These don't always go together, but if you have young kids, they do grow up.

My kids (all grown up now) are building me a new computer for my birthday. It'll be a 'development' machine first, so not a gas-guzzler, but will definitely run FSX better than my existing Athlon X2 4600.

New system is an i5 (Ivy Bridge), GTX 650, Win 8 on a SSD, FSX on a 1TB Barracuda. Plus a new monitor to replace my semi-fried one. Since I didn't think I'd get the chance to upgrade for a year or two, this is pretty amazing.

Should be ready early next month, I can't wait.

Looks similar to the system I'm looking at - how are the farame rates? - I think we do similar simming (GA, Warbirds, NZ) although I run Orbx.

Oops, just finished a post on your hardware thread.

I'm very happy with my new system, but then again I would be -- I went from something which was minimal FSX specs. My old graphics card was 256MB, and I locked the sim to 10FPS:) But I did have it tweaked for looks, so I did expect something similar on the new system, only smoother. Instead, FSX is completely different, I can fly 1000% better, and even without REX (at the moment, I need to re-download when my bandwidth month ends) I'm amazed at the extra realism. Framerates are tricky todeal with, but leaving it unlocked and flying the default Bell over VLC gives me 60+ with 'insane' settings -- most things full, although not AI.

I have installed NZNI, but I haven't really had a good look at it yet. I have NZSI, but I'm in no hurry to install that, I'm completely blown away by VLC on the new system at the moment.

Here's a weird thing -- I installed FRAPS for the video I've just uploaded to Youtube (Staggerwing down the Buller Gorge) but I've never been entirely happy with FRAPS after using the FS Recorder renderer. So I re-installed FS Recorder, and compared it to FRAPS. Normally I'd record a flight, then play it back using the renderer, which just takes whatever time it needs to render each frame. It would take about ten times as long to render a flight on my old system, so it was a bit tedious.

Now, I can render in real-time, just about, which means that I don't even have to record a flight first -- I can just grab a video while I'm flying, and although it obviously slows down, it isn't noticeable enough to affect my flying. The great thing about FS Recorder is that it makes sure that each frame is completed before it starts on the next, so I can now produce 1080p videos at full quality, and a guaranteed 25FPS. I'll upload something when I've got FSX looking its best. Well, almost 1080p, it only works in windowed mode, so it loses a few pixels where the top bar normally appears. (Final size 1920x1056).

I've uploaded a couple of 1080p videos tomy Youtube channel, nothing brilliant, but I'm having fun making them. One's a replacement Real NZ Nelson video, and the other is an 'intro' video for the channel, just a few minutes of random bits of scenery available on my site -- plus a wee look at FS-Creation's Milford X just to show that there's life in FSX without FTX:)

That does look pretty good - I thought something had recently happened to slow FRAPS down on my system.
But since I am wandering down Memory Lane at the moment, I see it has always interfered with performance.
It must really drag an FSX install at full settings.

Yeah, these latest videos use FSRecorder and the built-in (beta) renderer. Normally you'd record a flight, and play it back while rendering, as it varies the playback speed so that no frames are skipped. However for these vids I've just rendered as I flew, it slows it down a bit (it slows down time, rather than performance) but it's still perfectly flyable. I think you can use FSRecorder in FS9, but I think the renderer might just be FSX only.
