RNZAF Avionics training

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Malkymoo » Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:04 am

The RNZAF have developed their own training system using FSX, LEvel D 767 and Godzone products.

Have a look at the following link from RNZAF News:

Yep it's a nice set up. There's some pics around somewhere on here of some NZFF members at the Ohakea open day having a play on this and the Iroquois sim.
Testers are born to fiddle. What does this button do? Oh! Never mind.....

It makes sence to as it is a cheap effective way of teaching students things.
FS X is pretty godd and when you put addons with it you can make it pretty realstic.

Awesome.

What a set. I wonder at what cost?

We can all dream.

Are they running GNZLAPS and VOZ?

I think the 4x22" touchscreens would be more expensive. About US$1000 each I think.

i think it is funny when you look at the throttles, i think the saitek throttle would look alot better!!!! and more realistic feel too it but the set up looks cool, now all you have to do is building a cockpit around it!!!
In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.

Your tax dollars hard at work!! At least I got to have a fiddle with some of it! winkyy.gif

No use building a cockpit for it... its for the avionics guys... not the pilots! such a waste! tongue.gif

I was pleased to meet so many of you at Ohakea for the open day. Yeah, I'd like more realistic throttles as well but, as you have noted, its just for avionics training. We can also use the ATR-72 or Q300 but the 767 gives us the best all around performance.
I notice some of you mention the price. It is much cheaper to go down this path than to buy actual radio units or other components.
We are using XP so not really making the most of the Quad core or 4 gig of RAM. Once the Vista drivers for the touch screens are released then we will look at that.
One thing we are looking at once this project is all finished is a C-130 system to take recruiting. We tried Captain Sim but there are some teething issues with it.
If any of you would like another fly, join as Avionics and you will use it as part of your course...

So that would be Sgt Hamilton then? winkyy.gif

as a proud, out of the closet 'geek'... I have to say, the Avionics section was probably the highlight of the Ohakea open day for me biggrin.gif

That and the ride on the Iroquois sim... that was truly awesome...

But I was really impressed that the RNZAF actually seemed to be actively encouraging the 'Number 8 wire' mentality... the projects that were on display were great examples of the great kiwi tradition of identifying a need and then figuring out how to fulfill it on a shoestring!

A good example of this was when my brother was an Air Mechanic on 75 Squadron... and he knew how to fix almost every part of the A4... as opposed to the Amercians... where they had 'wheel guys'... 'wing guys'... 'tail guys'... 'fuselage guys' etc etc... rolleyes.gif

Who is your brother? I was on 75 for a few years before 2 SQN.

There is a change in NZ society where the No 8 wire is being phased out due to accountability and training. I read a great thing in the Shed magazine all about it and it is true. We could have bought a great system which would have looked and operated like the real thing but it was too expensive for our needs. We all wanted the flash one but through training needs analysis, we found that Commercial off the shelf stuff would do fine. Lets say our set up can do 80% of a professional sim for 1/10th of the price.

Iroquois sim, I had a fly and found I was doing figure 8's around the LZ. There is nothing natural about flying a helicopter.

Another note on our system, getting 6 screens out of FSX is a challenge.

Dayne Yates... I believe he made Corporal...

He took redundancy back around 2001/2002 I think... got his old job on 75 back via SafeAir... same job... 3 times the pay! dry.gif Then went to AirNZ and is now fixing Gas Turbines in Oz with SolaTech for $$$

That is something that is pretty smart (a little bit naughty using FSX though winkyy.gif and would have been something I would have liked to pursue if I had applied for a job at the JGSF at Devonport.....

It cant be any worse than the A4 weapons 'sim' that I had a quick blast on when my bro was flying for 75...haha it was like FS4!

You would be talking about hotshot. That was more of a tactics trainer but still good. We used it for our A4 Avionics training. Who is your brother? I was on 75 for 4 years.

I remember Barnsey quite well. He wasn't as loud as the other pilots but always had a mischievous smile, though. What is he up to now?
