I no the USS America (CV/CVA) entered Wellington in 1966, missed that , I had no influence on my parents at the age of 4 to get me to the capital .... tongue.gif i don,t understand why unsure.gif , but a visit by a Carrier in the 80s ohmy.gif .. Jeepers I thought i had a good memory , I recall the USS's Truxtun ,Whipple, South Carolina , and maybe the Long Beach , SUBS smile.gif Pintado and few others but a Super Carrier , maybe it stayed well out in international waters and and flew 14s from , never saw them over CHCH ... 1981 their was an join military , USAF F15s over NZ in concert with KC135s , E3WAs and the RAAF , fun times spent more time on the factory roof than in the plant , so close to Wigram biggrin.gif

Yeah the F-14s flew over my school I also remember an exercise over the central North island with US and Aussie jets where I saw F-16s, F-15s, KC135s, E3, F111, Mirage and A4s dogfighting and doing bomb runs. Very cool to watch life was certainly less boring at airports back then.

Just to add to ya post...
The Tornado F3 made its maiden flight on 20 November 1985 Entering service in July 1986, 152 F3s were ordered.

The Tornado made its combat debut in the 1991 Gulf War with 18 aircraft deployed to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. However, they did not get the opportunity to engage any enemy aircraft. The F3 lacked modern IFF and a full suite of defensive aids, thus they flew patrols further back from Iraqi airspace where encounters with enemy aircraft were less likely.

After 21 years, the replacement for the Tornado F3 is now on the horizon, as production of its successor, the Eurofighter Typhoon, has started.

The SAAB JA-37 Viggen (Thunderbolt) was the mainstay of the Swedish Air Force from it's manufacture in the 1970's until it was retired in 2005. The Viggen was used for a multitude of tasks - fighter, attack, reconnaissance, and trainer. The Viggen was one of the first canard design fighters to see production and active service with a national air force, and these canards along with other unique design features allowed the Viggen to operate from road bases as well as conventional air bases. Despite actively marketing the design, SAAB never found an export buyer for the Viggen.

Speaking of character, here are a few shots of the Viggen's predecessor: the J-35 Drakken -

A late Cold War era jet, this one of French origin - the Dassault Mirage 2000N/D

Fielded as a temporary replacement for the Mirage IV's, the 2000N (N=Nuclear) and it's conventional strike version the "D" model entered service with the ADA in the late 1980's and saw action over Bosnia and Kosovo during the Balkans wars. The 2000N/D differs from the 2000C in having two seats, and the 2000C's radar is replaced by a Thales Antilope ground attack radar with TFR capability. The Mirage 2000N/D now forms the backbone of the French Air Force's long range precision strike fleet until the Rafale can come into full service.

This one is by Roland Laborie, and is of payware quality despite being freeware.

My wingman 'Squeeky' taking off at a rate of knots in the Rafale

20 seconds and 20,000ft and iverted over the runway

The Rafale A technology demonstrator was rolled out in late 1985 and made its maiden flight on 4 July 1986. The SNECMA M88 engines being developed were not considered sufficiently mature for the initial trials programme to be conducted without risk (though their development status has often been underplayed), so the demonstrator flew with General Electric F404-GE-400 afterburning turbofans as used on the F/A-18 Hornet. Production orders were placed in 1988.

The Armee de l'Air received its first three Rafale Bs (to F2 standards) in late December 2004. They went to the Centre d'Expériences Aériennes Militaires (CEAM) at Mont-de-Marsan for operational evaluation and associated pilot conversion training.

Heathrow??

The total programme cost is around €28 billion, which translates to a unit programme cost of approximately €95 million.
The unit system cost is €91 million, or €88 million including development cost per aircraft.
The unit flyaway price as of 2006 is €51.8 million for the Air Force version, and €56.6 million for the Navy version.
