This threads so long now its hard to tell if this wasnt posted yet, but "¦ Northrop YB-49, freeware by J Higgs

Thread may be long :P , going of windy road at times - all with aircraft from the period :) , We have a Sea Fury/Mig15 at one end and plugged the other the AN225 , we now only have to fill the middle .

Hugh , the Northrop YB-49 , well history proved it worked 40 years later , US Edwards Airforce base I think was named after the test pilot who was killed test flying this aircraft , a devolpment to the propeller driven XB35 , in direct compietion with the XB36 .

Haha undaunted we will fill the gap!
I've learned a lot of interesting stuff through this thread, too.

Hugh very interesting shots of an amazing aircraft.
There is a little lineage to trace here, testament again to the influence late-WW2 German aerospace had on present-day machines.
(Think: Operation Paperclip...what a good name for a project designed to pick up advanced German weapons research.)
Jack Northrop was an admirer of the German Horten brothers, who did flying wing designs in the '30s.
When the Americans picked up an almost-complete Ho 229 flying wing at the end of the war, it was shipped to Northrop.

This led directly to the big post-war Northrop designs.
They were ahead of their time, all they really needed to work, was a good engine, and fly-by-wire.
Ian has alluded to this above, the B2 Spirit finally made this happen.
It has precisely the same wingspan, to the inch, as the YB-49: 172' 0"

Filling the gaps here would be easy :) Cold War teams practice and practice , to prepare.... browsing the Alphasim site , someone posted this link - think it'll add to the fun .

I'm sure this F15 pilot really wanted something to fill the gap :o

Nice shots Fauville - I like the Brit trainer combo -the Bulldog (presume its the PSS one?) I think it was my very first addon - darned if I can find it anywhere anymore as PSS has closed down - (although it was taken off their site long before they closed shop) - havent really looked on Avsim for it though - is it there?

Hey Naki, this one is the freeware one by Tim 'piglet' Conrad to be found somewhere on Flightsim site

The BAC Jet Provost was the aircraft many of the young RAF cold war pilots were trained up in before moving on to fighters such as the Hunter and Lightning, with 753 variants built between 1957 and the 1993.

The RNZAF never operated this particular craft, although in the 70's they flew a fleet of BAC 167 Strikemasters, baring a very simular resemblance, seeing as they were a development of the original Provost trainer.

However, I found myself a very fitting fictional repaint for Rick Pipers fantastic Provost model and took it for a test flight out of Woodbourne today. Being a jet trainer with aerobatic capabilities it is great fun to fly- It has an incredible maximum speed of 380 knots and can climb at 3,250 ft/min to an altitude of 44,000 ft! I wonder what the Soviet equivalent was...?

Anyway, it's getting late (early?) so on with the screenies- notice how the camo blends right in with the Marlborough countryside:

Long live the great Cold War Thread!

Never had this one, but looking at this I'll be tempted to go find it.
The camo works brilliantly with Marlborough.
Very good set T, I reckon your#3 tilt/crop is one of your best screens yet.

Agreed! That is one sweet Jet Provost :) Just looks so right against NZ sceneries. Meanwhile, back at the hot end of the Cold War... The Douglas Skyraider, too late for WWII and quickly surpassed by the growing number of jets making their way into the USN and USAF's fleet. The need for some intense ground attack work in 'Nam saw the A-1H and A-1E's given a new lease on life... Tough as nails, 15 hardpoints on its massive wing and the ability to loiter around hotspots in the jungle for hours on end made this THE weapon to take out anti aircraft missile launch and radar facilities. Also used as escort for the "Sandy" combat rescue choppers.

F105 Thunderchief , Returned :)
Designed to attack the Soviet Union in a nuclear strike role , found its fame as a tactical strike/level bomber during the Vietnam war .

Taking out Hanoi's Doumer Bridge , 11 August 1967 , speed , bomb-load

Inflight refuel capable , giving extra legs

610 off this model built , the F105D bore the brunt , off the 833 built total approximately half were shot down !

From this few , it would be great to have Multi-player inflight , mid retraction

Coming up on the Coast , ... ready to feet dry and pop-up

Feet dry , going in on target , lets hope the Sandy is waiting , incase i need rescue

Bombs gone , outta here
another unit in to help , strafe Ack-Ack sites

Time to head home !

F4 smokey , cough , i believe

airbrake pettals out even before afterburner cooled down , one wide ride

Home and Mission over !

LOOK ! .... its Kermit

Assuming that's the latest ALPHA "THUD" - you sure are quick off the mark, Ian!
Didn't know the tailpipe exploded to slow you down...
Very nice set, as you scroll down the cropping becomes more staccato, you can feel the tension build.
Heckava ride, knowing those loss stats, too.

Feels weird simming in the snow when the outside temperature here is 28 deg C...good shots of a beautiful (ALPHA?) model, H29.
Nice to see multiple aircraft in the screens, too.

Now then, we've had these in here, but not for the ultimate test of a pilot:
THE REFUELLING MISSION

Ask anyone who's done it, nothing can touch this.
I've always wanted to recreate THAT SHOT....
Y'know, the one where the buddies are hanging off to one side watching Aces High make a fool of himself for 10 minutes, then finally get it right...maybe
Real COLD WAR stuff.

They say that you should plant your feet on the ground and wiggle your toes as you approach (honest)

Connect!

Now there are various ways of setting this up in FS, most of them are cheats.
But you cannot lie to the moving camera! (can you?)
Here's the action:
