Ok Ian, I think you take the cake for the most spectacular screenshot on this thread! That first one, WOW! I wish they would modify the model file to turn it into a tanker though.

Thanks CN, no it's a Kaz Ito early one if I remember, freeware from Simviation.

Ian by now you "own" the "Turning/Burning" subthread - in 1950 they must've been really nervous of this new-fangled engine with no visible means of propulsion!.
Agree with CN - although the pose in US Navy colours really suits the bird, #6 is a great portrait.

Any-Ping-you-can-do
I-can-Ping-better

The Avro Shackleton has DNA going back to Lancaster bombers but was actually a development of the later Lincoln.

Maritime patrol, SAR, ASW, even AEW while the Nimrod programme got bogged down, Shackletons did them all, for 40 years from 1951.

Griffon engines were thirsty and maintenance-heavy. Big contra-rotating props made a noise that created high-frequency deafness in pilots

Last versions had tricycle undercarriage, sounddeadening, a galley, even sleeping quarters for those 15 hour patrols

'Course the SAAF was the only export customer, I couldn't find a paint anywhere.
Thanks for the pointer Ian, I'd completely forgotten this one, 3, 4 years ago?
Good one James! Some distinguished company in that project too, Rick Piper, Eric Cantu...

Love that Shackleton- I downloaded the beast a while back when I couldn't find myself a decent Lancaster. I remember taking it up the west coast of Australia with the VOZ perth scenery installed on a patrol flight, its a great model.

Time to leave the ASW theme for a bit and go to something with a bit more bite.

The Hawker Hunter!

First an FGA9 flown by 208sqn in the Persian Gulf, 1968.

Now a T7 model operated by 43sqn in Aden, 1966.

Yep most definatly. Your pics of the Neptune reminded my old man of a film of Neptunes hunting subs over the ice. He saw it at the AHSNZ in CHC, you know the one?

We had Neptunes in CHCH , based at Wigram later moved to NZCH in , operated with VX-6 , the 'AHSNZ' I have no knowledge , believe using there MAD equipment for the first mapping or to figure mag/polar. After that was the fatal Wilkes Field incident , but era belonged to the C124GlobemasterII .

EDIT : Sub hunting in the Antarctic 1957 , Movie probally more about Northern pole PV2's that period REALLY COLD WAR

Good counterpoint, the Hunter and Blackbird.
Different jobs to do, both beautiful in their own right.
Great pics too guys, moods suited to the aircraft.

EDIT:
Footnote to the Shackleton which I forgot:
Ian it belongs in your "Turnin' burnin' box too!
Turbojet hung on the wing of the MR3 for more Push so weakened the structure that the MR2's long outlived their younger brethren!

Last of the many... the Nightfighter Vautour IIN

In the fifties the time for specialised Nightfighters are over. The Vautour was the last example in NATO-Service and gave some show as light Bomber in 1967 with the Hel A`Avir, the Airforce of Israel.

The show was over Reunion, a small french (and European community) Island in the Indian Ocean.
