Spitfire over Bay of Plenty

Today was perfect for VFR flying. No wind, near unlimited visibility and not overly cold. Sitting at home thinking about mowing the lawns I decided to take an hour and fly a Spitfire from Tauranga to Rotorua, perform a Touch and Go in Rotorua, then return home.

The flight was conducted on Vatsim, unfortunately there was no other traffic in the BOP but I did have fun anyway. I looked for Trolley, hearing he was in the area in his Cessna, but alas didn't find him lol.

I have loaded the pics on my website, so if you want to take a look, click below:

I blew it up the other day over Auckland, all of a sudden flames were coming from the engine, then smoke then it died. That has never happened to me in FS before, I was quite gobsmacked.

Without looking too hard I couldn't find the radiator so flew this latest trip at less than full throttle to keep her alive!

Nice pic .. using activecam I always keep my eye on the oil temp gauge , soon as i hit 80/90max throttle to least nasty choice off flame/bailout .. HANGON ! no bailout , just a lotta huffin and fuffin to blow the flames out ! DOLE!:rolleyes:then a glide to save ya ass ... trouble is after saving y'self , u are not allowed the field tools to fix and fly out !

Why did the British invent the Glove Box ! or did they .. Every HONDA motorbike comes with a tool box , go Rolls Royce .... flippin heck NOTHING , Double DOLE! :D

Thanks, Mat, I couldn't have done a better advert for Tauranga! I haven't loaded up Tauranga for a while now, when I finish a job I like to keep away from it for a while, then go back and look at it with a fresh viewpoint.
It's still my favourite.

There are a lot of great tutorials by Dudley Henriques on Avsim for this Spitfire. I couldn't have managed without them.
Search Avsim forum for 'spitfire tutorial'.
And no, you can't go hard-out for long without blowing a gasket.

I spend a bit of time on IL2 Sturmovik on the Inspire multiplayer server. I dabbled in CFS3 but I didn't find it the best.

The planes need a fair bit of TLC on IL2. Opposite rudder to counter the torque and prop wash, radiator/cowl flaps, mixture adjustment, prop pitch, correct fuel and arming and so on. You need to energy fight, and planes will spin at any speed if your speed isn't up to your angle of attack. All the dials work in real time in IL2, very much like the VC in FS.

I haven't come across some of that flight modelling in FS before (I mean you can barrel roll a jet in FS!) and was somewhat suprised with the RealAir Spitfire that the engine management was reasonably unforgiving.

The creator of IL2, Oleg Maddox, has developed Battle of Britain, due for release soon. There are some nice cockpit screenies here and an overview of scenery details here.

Oleg may have created a little competition for FSX, for sure...
Oh, and Matt, don't feel too bad about what you do to airliners in FS9.
Gent named Tex started it all with the Real-life 707. way back.
See the show at

PS that pic link is definitely not working

Hells ! lookin at those screenies , 109 Amazin , then to reconize a frame off the Spitty cockpit half real from movie/video and pc animation .. I'm buying that sim for sure , IL2 Sturmovik never really had chance to view it .
Thanx for link Mat , love emm pic's :o any no if u could get a 109 for FS out now that RealAir s Spitty! .. Try in formation over NZscenery , now that would look good . 96 Wanaka , The Late Mark Hanna displayed the 109k , Superb! and the sound , so different to Sim models , a high pitch whine/whisle - as it faced u along the runway line ,
Sadly, we all no, both Ray and Mark Hanna are gone now but not forgotten .

Try this one then go from there:

Edit: For some reason the Spitfire page was showing in Firefox but not IE. It appears in IE now for me, hope it shows up for others

Fantastic-looking trip, Matt! I'm hoping to get to the real CFM, and it's great to see it represented in FS! Very cool!

My Spit flights are generally confined to short jaunts over the Marlborough Sounds and practicing my airshow routine. Next time I'll get some screenies to show you guys.

Any chance of some formation flying sometime?

Would love to!

Here's my sig for BF ... gotta love the Spitty. Just occurred to me that 5054 was the first Spitfire ;)

Have you seen "Mitchell" by Maximum Bob? Recorded with IL2 footage it's a nice tribute to the man behind the Spitfire. Available on YouTube here or there's a 55 meg download out there for the full file, which does it justice. I'll see if I can find the link.
