The Hydro Lakes
Posted: Thu Sep 03, 2026 8:35 amAs mentioned elsewhere, I spent some time in the sim, following the course of the Waitaki River from its source in three Alpine Lakes, through the amazing engineering works of the downstream canals, hydro power stations and dams, and the resulting wholly changed landscape.
It's potentially more than one would want in a single thread so I pasted my trip notes separately. I flipped between the flight and the notes to keep track of what's where, easiest if you have 2 tabs open in the browser.
The journey originally emanated from Oamaru at the coast, but makes more sense of the topography if you fly N-S.
I hope this makes sense, I would love to make this trip down the real river, but the sim will be a placeholder until then.
