It's been a while since I read about the Catalina Black Cats in William B. Bridgeman's autobiography. He later flew B-24s and, after the war, was initially a Douglas Skyraider pilot in El Segundo until he became a test pilot. He lost his life testing the Douglas X-3 while working on the D-558-2.
