Mount Cook (NZMC) - Franz Josef Glacier Aerodrome (NZFJ) (

Postby hasegawa » Thu Jul 31, 2025 7:06 pm

"I flew from the small airfield at Mount Cook (NZMC) to Franz Josef Glacier Airfield (NZFJ), a short journey of just under 45 minutes. No, I didn’t follow the magenta line — I took off from runway 13, climbed to gain altitude, and flew well to the west of Mount Cook rather than directly over it. On the far side, I turned toward the sea and followed the glacier downhill, gradually losing altitude to ensure a safe landing.

The weather was good overall, aside from two brief downbursts — but I had anticipated those and stayed alert.

It was a beautiful way to begin the day: a light aircraft, a handful of instruments, and that quiet sense of awe in the face of the landscape.

This is the kind of flying I’ve come to value most — more than technical marvels or 'managing airplanes.'"

A brave excursion.
If you had real world weather, the valley west of the Mount might easily have blown you back to where you started!
But it's certainly a beautiful flight, what flightsim is made for really.

Yes, I used real weather, generated with REX Weather Force, and was amazed that it went so smoothly this time. The mountains on the South Island always inspire me. They don't need to hide behind the Swiss Alps or the Caucasus.

I wish that FSX has mountains as sharp and realistic as your screenshots show.
