Beautiful paint of a beautiful clean livery

Quite noticeable in say, shot#5, is the dorsal fin fillet, and I wondered if it was an afterthought to improve longitudinal stability.
So I went trawling, didn't find anything to support that thought.

Such a benign looking aircraft. The Friendship name suits it.
But in casting about the interweb, found it has quite the accident record.
It has killed over 900 people in 28 incidents over the years. :o

Ouch...I'm still alive!...travelled on Air NZ/NAC F-27s quite a few times from New Plymouth to Wellington and Auckland.

Yes NAC lost one on approach to AKL in 1979.
2 killed. Only 4 on board.
The aircraft type did operate into some dodgy areas and with some equally dodgy operators.
The aircraft doesn’t have any tricky issues but it does have a lightly built rear end and “high speed flight” through turbulence was not recommended.
It was also an entry level airliner with low hour crews. It would be interesting to see what the mix of pilot error versus aircraft faults is.

That is a nice paint job ;)

It is a benign aircraft to fly. In terms of handling, certainly a nice aircraft to hand fly. With an engine failure on a hot day you are going around that tree rather than over it :P

As cowpatz says, some dodgy operators and some cases, really dumb pilots

ok, one more then. Fun detail, I think I've flown on this aircraft, a long long time ago
