Since the weather was good I decided to leave the Baron in the hanger and go for scenic flight up Mt Tarawera in the Dornier DO -27 landing on the airstrip near the crater

Early Morning start

STOL take off - this thing can almost hover in a stiff wind

and into the rising sun

No cloud over the top of the Mountain so all go for Mountain top landing -mm must get the crack in the windscreen fixed.

approaching Mt Tarawera airstrip - wasn't too sure what direction the wind was blowing (no wind sock up here) and ended up doing a tricky cross wind landing

and I stuffed up the flaps as they jammed down so had to get the repairs done (the engine also needed some oil) and by the time it was fixed it had clouded over so out came the tent for an overnight stay (not to sure where the tree came from as there are not suppose to be any up here)

another short take off next morning before the cloud comes in again

over Lake Tarawera and getting lower to avoid the cloud

and back to NZRO
