If people are reluctant to participate... why not allow two or three images per person? I for example am still unclear if I would not prefer a F-117 or a Lancaster shot...

Jep... I have also trouble with this rule. After I have used a unconventional picture I have no idee if it is within the theme or not. A second may reduce te risk to be outside.

OK ... here are my thoughts on "multiple" entries (!):

1) If you allow one, two or even three images then that will disadvantage anyone that posts only the one. So ... you'd have to make *everyone* enter the same number. People seem to have difficulty even posting ONE image, let alone three, so submitting more than one won't work for most people, IMHO.

2) For me, most of the fun in entering is precisely the decision-making involved in selecting my "best" shot. Usually, I have around TEN contenders, then start narrowing it down. More often than not, deciding between the last two or three candidates is the hardest part - but the most fun.

In the past, various people (myself included) have started a *separate topic* with an unofficial "mini-poll", asking for opinions/guidance as they're really not sure which image to submit.

As to whether the image fits the theme - all comp entry topics have a link to PM the person that sets the theme. Get their opinion first - before posting!

Makes sense, it is easy enough to replace your entry if you find something better, I try (but mostly fail) to enter early in the month, and if something better turns up later, all well and good. (back in the old days, I used to choose 3 or 4 shots, and 'live' with them for a while on my desktop, so those that didn't sustain my interest were discarded.)

Back to my one gripe -- having a theme. I do think that we all love different aspects of simming, and there are plenty of aspects which don't fire me up -- especially those related to military (hence my current 'sci-fi' theme entry:) or big jets. I understand that the theme is designed to push people beyond their niche, but if it was based purely on what interests each member, then it would be more of a joy than a chore.

Orbx's comp has an open theme, it just needs to show their product. We don't need that restriction even, anything goes.

Rob - didn't we cover this one, sort of? The idea of a "theme" was to give a chance to people that aren't screenshot artists per se (or aren't Photoshop wizards) but maybe had an unconventional way of solving a problem.

If we applied the ORBX rules here, I think many people would drop out - as they fear the comp would be won every month by the usual suspects.

I agree - sometimes the theme can be a hard one - but, more often than not, it's pretty open-ended.

Oh well, worth another crack...
In that case I might have shot myself in the foot -- I really meant "I love military and big jets!"

Sorry if I came over a little unsympathetic <_< - it's just that we've had so much discussion about all this over the years - and tried all sorts of changes (and every trick in the book) - yet people still find it hard to get motivated to participate. What might appear to be a good idea for some puts other people off. The problem is that when you're talking about such small numbers of entries/votes in the first place, it's almost impossible to work out whether the last set of rule changes had any effect.

For instance - one of the more recent changes was to drop the "over NZ" requirement. We gained maybe two new entrants, but lost around four or five around the same time. Hard to tell whether that was even related, but the change didn't seem to have the desired effect!

No worries, I know how hard it is to run a tidy ship. And I admit I did not read through the history of this topic but just followed your last call via mail....

From mobile hence short
Cheers,
Martin

I wouldn’t get too stressed about it. We can’t even get folk to vote in the general elections and that’s only once every 4 years.
I am probably a main offender for not voting and that was mostly due to a pathetic internet connection so I stayed clear of any image intense posts.
Now I have a decent connection I will try and vote on a regular basis.

With your now decent connection there is no reason not to enter an image in the comp :P as well as vote

been reading this thread and thinking it over...

we are the 'NZ' flight-sim forum so I think the banner that represents us should still
be 'NZ'-centric in some definable way, either by the aircraft markings, the scenery in the background or
some other method essentially 'Kiwi'.

Themes? Meh... I'll go with the flow on this one.

I also agree with the idea of just an entry and the voting button and no other identification at all. No names no numbers.
everyone will then choose based on just the aesthetics alone.

my $0.02 worth anyway.
Cheers.
