Gotta move fast - fast-moving thread!
Forgot to mention it is very much still alive in China!
I've actually stood near the landing zone as one of these came in, and it looked massive!
I suppose there are many bigger ones now, but it made a huge impression at the time.

..............................The largest Cold War Interceptor , The TUPOLEV TU28 (Tu102)( TU128 ), Nato code name FIDDLER

The thread starter .... a very large TU22 BLINDER - to compare - The TU28 FIDDLER

Not a scaled pic , the Tu22 at 133 ft long - Tu28 at 90 ft long , but Tupolev,s plan form is very obvious .

or for those trying to imagine the size off this fight , Charl did a very close compare to the USAF,s CONVAIR B58 HUSTLER at the beginning

Armed only with 4 missiles , being only short in length of a CT4 Airtrainer , :o Big Bombers , Big Fighters , Big Missiles

This model still a WIP (beta) , by Dimitri Samborski at the Samdim Design Bureau works and further skins by Enzo "Lazerbeak" Soliani

with four fictional export schemes, with only a MAX speed 1080 CLEAN ! :o wow , equals one off its on missiles for turning

Definitely not a Dogfighter .. but for 1957......... she is pretty !

Don't you love the Tupolev Main Gear backflip treatment?
Whew! it is a biggie...you scouted far & wide for this one, Ian!
See they saved a little design time by borrowing something from the front end of an Avions Marcel Dassault product :wink2:

........... Well not always , COIN (counter insurgency) and FAC (forward air control) The Rockwell OV-10 Bronco , another brilliant model by Tim Conrad

and it even has a KIWI connection

wicked little bug eye in the sky , with a bite ,

OV for 'observation' ... BUG EYE

the detail to this model is eye boggling as well !

ya have to love Tim's little personal addons ....... :P

Peculiar .... Pretty to me

its not quik at 250 knots , just under 300 mph

Great detail shots Ian, I'm sure my version isn't as up to date as yours.
The Bronco was designed by the Army - 'nuff said.
But before they designed that one, back in the 50's they designed the Grumman OV-1 Mohawk.
Seems you need twin turbines and many tails to do Army stuff.
It went to Vietnam...

Israel got some, so did Argentina and South Korea. The suitcase on the fuselage carries a Side Looking Radar.

When the Army got the next thing, US Customs got some too.

Another Peculiar Piglet Production - this one doesn't have the Dog Treats however!

Nice to see the Bronco and Mohawk out and about! Two great models for a bit of low n slow(ish) :)

Next up, the Yak 18T... Technically not as much of a Warbird as some of the others in this thread, but it was used by the DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Collaboration with the Army, Air Force and Navy, which sponsored aero clubs throughout the USSR)

A four seat trainer, it was mainly used by Aeroflot for full IFR training... being from the Yakovlev bureau however, it is fully aerobatic ;)

A readily available cheap warbird... late model (1990-2002) are fetching roughly 89,000 Euro with less than 250hrs TTSN, new fabric covering of the control surfaces and a repaint!
No, she aint the prettiest, nor the fastest, but theres something about being able to perform a vertical roll with your best mate beside you and the respective Missus's reaching for the barf-bags in the back

Oh, and I think I got that spray effect sussed out here Charl, perfect display smoke

Ian got me reminiscing - "Piglet's" superb model has been around a long time in FS9 (Did it start out as FS2002?), and was my default aircraft for many months because it was so good.

I used to love the squishy suspension action, and of course the whimsical VC notes always reminded you not to take this all too seriously!
Broncos were used by Army, Marines, Navy, even the Forestry guys.
Great aircraft, just to hoon around in...

The -L-29 Delphin. A Czechoslovakian jet trainer that was the standrd Warsaw Pact jet trainer during the 60s and 70s untl replaced by the L39 Albatros from the same manufacturer. Exported to many Soviet friendly countries and stil in service in parts of the world.

Plenty now in private hands including 4 here in New Zealand - ones right here at Tauranga.

This is "piglet" Tim Conrads model.

Hi all,

As you all know, I'm something of a warbird fan. One aircraft of the Cold War era has always held a place in my heart, despite the fact it never made it into production. For years I've hunted and longed for this machine to be in FS. Now, thanks to AF Scrub, we have her at last.

Gentlemen and ladies: the Piper PA-48 "Enforcer"

Developed initially as a stock P-51D converted to turboprop power, the concept evolved over the years to be the aircraft seen here: almost A DOZEN underwing hardpoints, longer, bigger, extractor-seat equipped, and sharing only 10% of parts with the original Mustang.

Believe it or not, this aircraft (based on a WW2 vintage fighter) was being trialled by the USAF for their use in the 1970s and as late as 1984! The idea was to use it for counter-insurgency and ground attack. I think it was a mistake not to have ordered it, but ah well. Maybe that's just my own bias as I looooooooove the Enforcer!

She had all modern avionics (including the very handy HUD seen here) and tiptanks for longer range. The Lycoming T-55 turboprop used a cut-down Skyraider prop, and somehow managed to keep the sexy lines of the P-51D intact. The "pregnant" radiator belly scoop, made redundant by the TP, was removed, resulting in an even sleeker machine.

The green arrows indicate tracer from the underwing miniguns.

The VC is fairly basic =- hence the lack of screenie! - but you can fly fairly comfortably using just the HUD in 2D view. She has the basic lines of the Enforcer and optional armament. The strobe light activates the miniguns, complete with tracer and sound effect. I've had LOTS of fun strafing the Wanaka boundary fence in this baby!

Luckily for us, Mr Scrub has also produced another modernized Mustang for our pleasure, the tall-finned, tiptanked but still MERLIN-powered Cavalier Mustang.

Available now at FlightSim.com. Well, they will be when it's back up! ;)

And Alfa, nice to see the -18T! I've seen one of those lovelies parked up at Nelson./...would've given anything to see ZK-SSR fly :(

Cavalier ...Zac - this company , they really looked after this aircraft , using not abusing the key word of the period COIN , guess by further design , two seater would be a lot healthier at low level ,those extra pair of eyes , thus putting the "Enforcer" out of contentsion BUGGER!
