The Royal New Zealand Air Force acquired three Lockheed C-130H Hercules aircraft in 1965, and when these aircraft were delivered to No. 40 Squadron at RNZAF Base Auckland, they were quickly put to work transporting personnel from the New Zealand Army's 161 Battery, and also aid, to Vietnam. The aircrafrt were also used to make New Zealand's first flights to Antarctica.
By 1969 the Hercs had proven so valuable as strategic and tactical airlifters that a further two were purchased, including NZ7005 (seen in this video).
This week's video shows the final flyover of three of these C-130H aircraft which have finally been officially retired (after new C-130J replacements were purchased). The last of the aircraft flew the length of New Zealand over two days, and then made their last ever approach and landing at RNZAF Woodbourne (seen here) in Blenheim, New Zealand.
40 Sqd RNZAF - Full Length Documentary
Interest in the RNZAF's Hercules aircraft is (not surprisingly) running high at the moment, so we've made a special deal on the Historical Machines TV channel, and for a limited time you can rent to view the full length documentary 'To The Four Winds - The Story Of The RNZAF's No 40 Squadron' for half price. Produced by Demand Video Productions back in 1994, this is a fascinating look at the unit as it was in the mid-1990s.

Once a Squadron with more than twenty Douglas C-47s (DC-3s) on its inventory, No. 40 Transport Squadron was formed to support New Zealand and allied forces in the Pacific.
Disbanded in 1947 the Squadron was reformed in 1954 with British built aircraft -- four Handley Page Hastings. Progressively re-equipped with Douglas DC-6s, Lockheed C-130s and most recently joined by Boeing 727s, today's 40 Squadron of the RNZAF operates just seven aircraft.
This two-part documentary provides an overview of 40 Squadron's history since its initial formation in 1943. Supported by first-hand interview material, many archive and personal photographs, selected film and videotaped footage, this programme presents a rare and sometimes humorous insight to an operational squadron's development.
Footage includes glimpses of RNZAF operations in the Pacific, 40 Squadron's DC-6s, their first Hercules C-130 flight into Antarctica, a bulldozer drop by parachute onto Pitcairn Island, 'Desert Storm' activities, a C-130 flight to Somalia, and other selected operational activities.

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand Air Force have also recently produced a short film about the RNZAF's C-130H fleet (which includes some of our footage - yay!).
Learn all about the aircraft from the people who flew it in the 1960s, and the final crews who operated the Hercules until its retirement. The film is a tribute to this extraordinary aircraft and to all of those who maintained and operated the mighty Hercules over the years.
