Maun - "Seronga Airport", Okavango Delta

Postby hasegawa » Sun Apr 19, 2026 5:25 pm

A flight from Maun Airport into the heart of the Okavango Delta, heading towards Seronga Airport – in a Dornier Do 27.

This is not about flying the direct route. Once you leave Maun behind, the real experience begins: staying low, following the waterways, and taking your time.

Wildlife appears again and again — giraffes, wildebeest, elephants. Instead of flying directly overhead, I keep my distance and approach from the side. It’s not about getting as close as possible, but about respecting the environment.

In a simple, rugged aircraft like the Do 27, it becomes clear: flights like this are not about getting somewhere — they’re about discovering the world below.

Not directly overhead.
Not too close.
Just observing.

Elephants in the Okavango Delta — from a respectful distance.

Interesting to see what the sim does with that scenery, this time of year it would be essentially dry.
Come August, the floods arrive and create all those waterways.

It's one of the stars of ecological planning triumphing over subsistence farming, and has proven to be financially a winner too.
Long may it last.

Seasonal peculiarities... aren't always enjoyable in MSFS because they aren't implemented properly... But I'm not in a position to judge the "technical feasibility".

Cool, I flew out of there in real life last year in a Gippsland Airvan...there are plenty of elephants and hippos (amongst other things) in the delta. A constant stream of helicopters, Caravans and Airvans fly from Maun. Is that default scenery?
