Well on Friday I decided I'd head on up to Palmy North to see my cousin who drives a 470hp Scania 6x4 tractor unit under contract to Toll/Tranzrail. I booked myself on the 7.25am Overlander, and arrived at Palmerston North station at about 9.45. I took a couple of pics (why not tongue.gif ) so I thought I'd post them here.

The Overlander:


The Scania at a big mill just outside Marton. In that container is 20 tonnes of Barley that will be tipped through a big grate just behind the trailer:


The Scania again, just before tipping. I found it strange that barley's not shipped in a big bulk tanker rather than a shipping container!

The inside of the truck. Anyone recognize what program we were watching on my Ipod? biggrin.gif We were waiting for the truck to be unloaded- it was a powdery substance used to make PVC pipes, and had to be slowly tipped out- it took about an hour so we had to sit and wait.


It was an awesome day, soon he's starting a milk run between PN and Hawera which hopefully I can go on- should be great.

Hi Nice shots.. is that Scania got a 18 speed road ranger or is it just a straight 12???

Its been way to long since I've done a long haul trip last one I did was with PBT in a CH Mack HN - WN.

And countless others over the years all to different places.

Yeah they're good fun. A guy down the road has a new Iveco Stralis painted in CourierPost colours and he does Turangi swaps each night with it. I want to try get a ride with him biggrin.gif

Friday was just really round town, the longest trip was PMR-Marton whcih was only 30mins each way. The milk run should be better because it's longer, especially because it's in his boss' new 8x4 Scania 470 tractor unit!

I just dont understand it ... unsure.gif a truck with more wheels than a 747 tongue.gif headscratch .... unsure.gif some reason .. a Jumbo carries a lot more containers rolleyes.gif

I wouldn't be surprised if his bosses truck has an Opticruise thats what the latest Scanias use.

Yep it does. Like cruise control except it holds a preset speed downhill aye?

No its an automatic gear changing system although it does have cruise control that will hold a downhill speed in a selected mode one of my mates drives them and thinks they are quite good.

The worlds former biggest truck is heavier than a A380-800 fully loaded.

SUBS , you forgot to mention the extra hour overtime at the beginning and end of the shift ... it takes that long to climb up into the cab , its been known some take their sleeping bags up and stay the week laugh.gif

Yeah compared to previous Auto gearboxes on trucks the Scania one has hill mode(H) for hill ascent and descents which also adjusts the jake brake for descents on large hills. The cruise control is standard now days to be set on fixed speeds and normally for the latest trucks you can set the speed at which it'll apply the jake when its exceeding the set speed eg 3km/h. I think most brands now are going automatic I remember a friend of mine drove a Volvo with Eaton automatic which had tiptronic as well and appearantly the Opticruise has a manual mode.

I stood next to one of those big dump trucks in christchurch 12 years ago that was brand new and it had 3 ladders to reach the cab and they were transporting the tray on a separate transporter.

LOL they were on transporters ready to be shipped to the mines so they weren't going anywhere in a hurry its amazing the tray on its own is as big as a house. 2 x trucks = 4 x transporters with dollys. pirate.gif
