Just got back from Raro after a short holiday, and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I didn’t get to go planespotting- I couldn’t find the flight times in the local paper, and I think there was only one jet arrival per day anyway. (I spent most my time swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing instead :P ) However, I’ve uploaded some other assorted pics from my trip here, some aviation related, some not:

At the gate in Auckland- the ticket said we would be on an A320, but we got the 767 instead

On the ground at Rarotonga International

(The captain invited us up to the cockpit and let me have a look around once we landed)

Palm Grove Beach where we were staying- this is where I was sitting this time yesterday!

Same beach, taken from about knee height in the lagoon

One of the islands of Muri beach

The Saturday morning market in Avarua, where we bumped into just about everyone who was on the flight out there

The Rarotongan equivalent to a traffic jam

The Cook Islands version of St Lukes Mall

And their Beehive

Shipwreck on the rocks at Avarua harbor

That’s centigrade being measured on the left!

Sunset from a beachfront restaurant on the west coast

Found this amusing bumper sticker in the airport carpark

The main terminal at RAR

One of the domestic Saab’s parked up on the ramp- I was gutted to find an email in my inbox when I returned from Air Rarotonga offering me a jumpseat ride out to one of the outer islands and back while I had been there!

The 777 for our flight home, I’d never been an Air NZ -200ER before and loved the new IFE!

‘Downtown’ Avarua from takeoff. The slight haze at the bottom of the photo is the heat blur from the huge RR Trent engine mounted a few metres infront of our seats in row 56

Climbing out over the 2140 foot high island skyline

Clouds over the Pacific Ocean- the return flight took 4 and a half hours due to headwinds blowing right at us from NZ

PS: None of these pics are edited, the sea really was that blue, and the sand really was that golden- a real tropical paradise! I wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer though, the island is actually very tiny, only 30km in circumference, and we had done everything there was to do. Plus, I was missing the internet and need to catch up on the latest posts in the forum!

Thanks for sharing the pics. I use to live in the house on the bottom right under the tail of the SAAB.

Nice pics Andrew.

I doubt there would of much to see in regards to other aircraft from what I recall all I saw were (when I was there a couple of years ago) were the usual 767s & A320s plus the local Bandeirantes & sf340 and one lone 172 and a microlight. Your time is better spent snorkeling and sunbathing!

Ahh 14000 ft high island skyline?? not sure about that!

I guess that's what got you into aviation then? I saw all the locals lining the fences around the runway as we taxied out for departure- must be an impressive sight, so close to the action..

Whoops, should have read Wiki properly
Rarotonga Island stands over 14750 feet (4500 meters) above the ocean floor. The island is 20 miles (32 km) in circumference and has an area of 26 square miles (67 km²). At a depth of 13000 feet (4000 meters), the volcano is nearly 31 miles (50 km) in diameter. Te Rua Manga, 'the needle', at 2140 feet (658 meters) above sea level, is the highest peak on the island.
Will amend it now! Come to think of it, no way could I have taken that photo of the volcano at 14,000 feet ASL just 2 minutes after take off, the 777 would have had to be climbing incredibly fast for that to happen- sorry for the mistake! :whoops:

Great pics

I was in Raro back in 2006 and still have a real place for it in my heart. Was surprised to see they're putting the 777 on that route now. When I went, the 767 was the biggest ANZ bird that flew there.

Yeah me too- apparently it flew in the previous night from LA, then departed the next day at 4.45pm to Auckland, meaning all the ANZ would have had to put all the American passengers on board in hotels for the day- a nice little stop en route but surely a costly decision keeping the 777 grounded for 12 or so hours... I've also been told ANZ used to fly 747s in at night time, and the whole island turned up to see the first daylight 747 landing, which was glided in and used up the entire length of the runway!

Yeah man, when you are standing on those beautiful golden beaches, it's hard to believe its real and not a travel brochure... utter tranquillity... apart from the day it rained, but it was still bloody hot then too, and we just swam in the pool for the afternoon :P

Great pics.
Looks like you had a good time really.
Pity about the jumpseat ride - would have been a nice addition.

Cheers

Awesome pics Andrew! Loved them. I guess given it's school holidays there is plenty of seats to fill, I'm not surprised Air NZ upgraded you to the bigger jets. Very lucky to get two different Boeings though!

I've been in both, Qantas 767-300 and Malaysian 777-200, and I much preferred the T7- but maybe that was because the 767 was a crappy old domestic one flying from Sydney-Darwin

Hey Andrew what's the time difference between NZ and Raro? It looks like sunset when you are leaving and the middle of the day when you arrived?

Oh ok so your first shot is sunrise rather than sunset. I see. :P
