Then I see a nice laptop on trademe. How could that be a problem?? I say I would pay the difference between that, and what we sell this one for, but for some reason i still get a no for an answer

What do I do?? :(

P.S. They want me to keep this laptop for 4 years!

i recomend getting a part time job saving up about $1500 should get a nice box for that with all the bells and whistles then sell your laptop for a nice moniter lcd and some cool joystick/rudderpedals and with the change id get fsx this would take maybe two years and by then your parents mite not have so much to say
all an all this is a good plan if 4years is to long plus you will have a good job to buy all the great addons coming out
cheers mike ...
(just an opinion)
all good things take time ....... :)

As an insurance assessor I say that you run a greater risk of loss or damage to a laptop. Physical loss can be replaced but data loss is another story. Would they like to see your study material, assignments and so on stolen, lost or fried after a can of coke fell on the unit?

Theft from houses of desktops now are not as common compared to laptops from cars, bedrooms and motel rooms. It's easier to flick off a laptop at the pub than a desktop.

As a result of the higher risk of loss or damage to laptops and potential limits on replacement basis cover, the premium cost / benefit ratio is low.

Also, it make sense to have a decent desktop that can be upgraded for a heck of a lot less than laptops cost to change specs. In 4 years your laptop will be worth next to nothing .. eg: would you spend good money now on a 2001 laptop running Windows 98, with 32 megs RAM and a 4 gig Hard drive?

You also get more bang for your buck with desktops, as you aren't paying for everything to be miniaturised.

.... and finally, you shouldn't be forced to game on a low specced laptop!!

Disclaimer: I'm a parent too of 15, 12 and 10 year old kids, they have a 2.8 P4 with 1 gig RAM to play on. They appreciate it, I think...

i personally don't understand the obsession with laptops.
desktops are far more powerful in terms of graphics, storage, speed etc... they're less expensive and upgradable and you don't have to slouch over the keyboard and screen. (he says typing on a laptop)

i say push the desktop, ditch the laptop. they're no good for games.

problem :Desktop is completly out of the question. My parents do not want to hear anything about a desktop

The reason why we have a laptop is because of the lack of room in our house. Yes there is room in the house, but it would not be convienient having a desktop in the middle of the hallway

Anyways, I managed to sit my parents down, and very carefully I discussed the reasons why upgrading the laptop would be a good idea. Guess what?

Lets just say this-in 1 week time, we should be seeing some very nice screenshots :P
