Could I get into the ATC Network with a VHF radio available from Dick Smith's? The idea came into my head as I enjoy watching planes at the airport and would love to know their progress and where they are etc. and I used to listen sometimes in the Command Unit fire truck in CHCH.

Yep. I have a Uniden 72XLT which I can listen to ATC and cops with.

You can easily program tower, ground, appoach, controc etc etc frequencies into your scanner, providing it is within bandwidth range, and depending on where you are standing/how big your aeiral is, you should be able to pick up the pilots voices.

Yep easy as. All you need is a reciever with a band ranging from at least 118.000MHz to 138.000MHz I think it is.

Trolly. Are these available from DSE. How much do they go for? I wouldn't mind one myself.

Alternatively, just go to www.liveatc.net for streaming ATC feeds from lots of common towers from around the world- I sometimes listen to Auckland and Hamilton towers...it uses hardly any bandwidth and can easily be listened to on a dialup connection

You can't hack into anything with them :P VHF radio isn't protected at all. Mobile phones etc run on 900mhz/1.8ghz frequencies, they're digital and encrypted :P The range is as far as you've got line of sight to the transmitting station.

yeah, line of site for aircraft i'm afraid, I have to be within about 1km of the airport to hear them. but if you go higher (like on a hill), it's way clearer. you can also pick up police, ambulance, fire (and various other communications...)

and Tom, please stop double posting. I'm going delete your second post if you do it again.

Is it possible to just play around with your walkie talkie and a screwdriver and shorten the frequencies? Mind you that would only get one airport tower....

My dad had a radio that could do this. He had a technician from the airport come around and change the bands on a cheap n nasty radio. Great to listen to apparently.

They have been removed to an apparent breach of the Radio & Telecommunications Act. Is a minor breach but one which does not let LiveATC to host NZ frequencies anymore sad.gif
