I couldn't post this alongside Chopper nut and Hasegawa's wonderful stuff ..... it's (mine) not really modeling.
I purchased (for an undisclosed sum) a diecast "JC Wings 1/200 scale 737-300 with no markings at all, other than standard airframe/engine stuff. Got in touch with John at Oldmodels decals here in NZ, and purchased some 1/200 727 (RNZAF) decals, and came up with this .... no rego as yet.



There is a large range of "blank" diecast models available from JC Wings in 1/200, that really lend themselves to some enhancement.... but not cheap.
If you are wondering, a 1/200 737-300 is about 16.6cm long, a 747-8 is 37.5cm, and an ATR about 13.5.

I think you may be on to something there...

Been about half a century since I made a large scale Hawker Harrier kit, and spraypainted it with stuff from the hardware store.
Well, I thought, things might have moved on, wonder what's the latest in skills and craft.

After half an hour of watching paint dry, I realised the real deal might take a little more time and skill than I can muster.

I can still provide the Appreciative Audience portion of the scale modeller's craft, however.

Don't worry too much about what advanced modellers can produce. I'm sure there are some lurkers on here who take one look at my creations and scoff that I don't know what I'm doing because I don't airbrush.

Get a simple, relatively new kit (the Airfix JP4 is a good one) and just go through the process. Don't worry about the exotic paints, just get Humbrol or Tamiya and some glue, a knife, file and some wet and dry sandpaper.

Go through it methodically following the instructions, test fitting and using as little glue as possible. You'll make heaps of mistakes but that's how you learn. And as long as you have fun, that's all that matters.

You're right that it should be fun.
It may just be that I don't have the temperament: as a kid I can remember getting a little too much polystyrene cement in the fuselage join, giving it a good squeeze together and watch in horror as the sausage oozed out.
Instead of waiting to let it set for remedial action, 9 times out of 10 you'd take the chance and give it just the smallest of WIPES, taking with it all panel lines and rivets
No amount of Humbrol would ever fix the result.

But I do love browsing the models; Mighty Ape has me in their banner ad algorithm, and I know that at some point I am going to succumb to something frightfully expensive and time consuming.

We ALL put too much glue on as kids. I had the exact same experience. Glue is different now though in that it comes in liquid form with a brush from Tamiya and is a hell of a lot easier to apply.

I built a cutaway version many moons ago which was interesting, but I made sure I had the right sized printer first

Glue is different now though

I do see the YouTubers put the bits together and then dab on that magic liquid.
Wish I'd had that, who knows what incredible modelling career might have followed

It was a revalation when that stuff came out. There are two different ones from Tamiya, normal and extra thin. Very handy stuff.
