Having just sat through days of health and safety legislation , and being told what 20 steps you need just to poach a bloody egg ...can you imagine getting away with this today.

No edge protection, no ppe, no rescue plan, no pre start conversation, no JSA, .......NO fun.

I was the first OH&S chairman at my workplace at that time. We were given lots of good training, including a seminar where an Industrial Lawyer said "This legislation is so poorly drafted that it will provide my colleagues with more income than RSI, Bad Backs and Industrial Deafness combined ever did" .
And that has been what has happened ever since. The legal profession were not then allowed to tout for custom, but they soon changed their rules and we got all these "No win, No fee" lawyers advertising their services.
A beanfeast for the lawyers, and nothing to improve safety on the job. Just the requirement to leave a paper trail, "or we'll sue the pants off you "

Do you think the vertical arrow on the side of the fuselage describes their predicament?

In the late 90s a fellow techo who I knew well in the RNZAF was working on the top of a Seasprite helo. Whilst moving position he tripped and fell, and cracked his skull open on the hangar floor. He was placed into an induced coma at hospital and his family (wife with two young children) were told he had a 50/50 chance of surviving and if he did he would suffer life long brain damage. He returned to work 12 months later after making a remarkable recovery.
You can say OSH is killing fun, but when you see the consequences from such accidents I can say there is a lot wrong with that picture. There is zero need to be walking around on top of an aircraft if you don't need to be there.

Your right of course DB , and there is a lot wrong with that picture, but it was a different world in 1976 ....but, I understand where your coming from.

I had an email from a female acquaintance , who pops into the forum now and then, and she took exception to the fact that I posted a photo depicting, a semi unclothed male "man handling"small children...."mostly female"
May I just say that the choice of photo was only because of what I've been doing all last week (H&S), combined with my regular visit to the Air Force photo website....not until it was mentioned did I, take offence at the inference , and distance myself from the person concerned.
Its a photo of kids on an aircraft for Gods sake.... Why am I defending myself here ? Because the worlds gone bloody mad

As I do. The kids don't seem to be distressed. The 'strangler' appears to be helping a little one off the access ladder. onto the top of the fuselage; behind the kids is an adult size figure. I would say this is a snap of a family visit to where Daddy works. Risks being taken, certainly, but under adult supervision. Don't forget that kids see a much larger world than we big people do. Just look at how they run around in supermarket aisles. I couldn't do that, there's not enough room

As an electrical engineer since the age of 16 in 1950 when I did my 6-year apprenticeship, the overwhelming restrictions placed on my self by the onslaught of the European; "Elf and Safety" Regulations in the 1970s' and 80's, encouraged me to take early retirement in 1984 and get away from it all! I now see all my fellow tradesmen (and women), and everyone else, exasperated by all the rules and regulations controlling their lives! I have never been so "Elfy" since I retired, and never looked back!... ...!

Sad, unfortunate news, Mike.

I must say, in all my years as an Electrician, (and beyond), I have never suffered an electric shock...
..I've fallen out of bed, toppled off my Motorcycle, and missed the toilet bowl a few times...
...but never touched a live 240/440 volt power line!
We; "Sparks" get to appreciate the dangers in advance!.... ...!

"Elf 'n Safety"...Heaven, (or whatever), help a tradesman/woman caught up a ladder without a work mate standing on the bottom rung to keep it steady!.... ...!

Sometimes, the World goes mad!
