I've been following all this sort of news daily since landing in California in 1995 with my copy of "Flight Unlimited II".

I know all these areas like the back of my hand!

An annual wildfire hazard also experienced by Mike (emfrat) in Oz Land.

Too many buildings planted in amoungst too many trees!

Los Angeles is alight at the moment!

...and it's only getting worse!

Never learn!

I would have thought that during fire season in California they would have permanently airborne fire spotters (or even thermal imaging satellites) that detect early signs of fire. In addition there would be heavy lift firefighting aircraft stationed nearby (or even airborne during peak times) on immediate standby. Hit them early and hit them hard. The cost of this would be minimal compared to the widespread damage and rebuild costs caused by these fires. They seem to wait too long before calling in the big boys.
Unfortunately the bush/foliage there has a high flash burn so spreads quickly and ironically most of it requires periodic burning to propagate.

I followed the harrowing news and images, every day!

A heart-breaking experience for all the wonderful folk living there.

Typical of all Americans, they just shrug their shoulders, and start all over again! Amazing people!
