"Justice Collins ruled that the decision to suspend him from St John's College was unlawful and the school's rule over hair length was vague and uncertain, Newstalk reported".

The policy:

"Mr Battison sought a judicial review after the principal and board of trustees suspended him in breach of the schools' hair rules which says students are to have "hair that is short, tidy and of natural colour Hair must be off the collar and out of the eyes. (Extremes, including plaits, dreads, and mohawks are not acceptable)."

Where is vague or uncertain in that?????

"Today, Justice Collins concluded that the conditions imposed on Mr Battison's return to the college were "unreasonable in the circumstances of this case because the hair rule does not say a student's hair must be cut to the satisfaction of the principal".

Good grief...as if dealing with today's youth is not challenging enough.

Hey I went through the same thing in High School, they tried that cr@p with me saying my hair was too long. It was tied back and I pointed out the rule in their books that said "Long hair must be tied back". This school was just trying to bully a pupil and got it's just desserts instead

RULEs are Rules , look at the git , Arrogant as hell - , I saw this on TV news last night ... throw the twit on an Army course ! ... they will get the hair cut !

Yes what a waste of a very limited resource. All because of this vain little Kretin.
The issue of hair (and uniforms for that matter) in schools should have been sorted out long ago and on a national level.

Thats the issue, there was NO rule in the schools books that said he could not have long hair, he kept it tidy and tied back. They unfairly suspended him and they got what they deserved for doing so.

Not according to the article. There was a rule but according to the judge the what was missing was "to the Principal's satisfaction" (which to me seems more subjective than the rule itself).

A lot of people seem to have forgotten what it's like to be 16. Challenging the boundaries is what they do, and I would imagine that we all did that to some extent in our mid teens. He certainly looks a lot tidier than any of the guys I went to school with -- the early 70s were not a good time for hair:)

A teenager who's come out on top of the system, legally and non-violently -- that's a good thing, surely.

The rule itself didn't specify LONG HAIR it only said hair had to be off the collar and tidy and in this kids case he kept it off the collar and tidy. There is a reason it went to court and rightfully so, the school was bullying a student... As I said I went through this same cr@p at high school, I know how that kid felt... Do You???

Its a bloody hair cut , snot nose little brat ... obviously has some pull some strings even to go to court ... rules made for some and rules made others , I do recall when I was 16 .. to get away from where I was when I was 16 was a life battle and no parents around - .. A court case for a hair cut , lets all decide and change the rules .. trouble with this world - to much dribble and godboy and human rights shite

Ian, HE WAS FOLLOWING THE RULES..... The rule was hair must be TIDY AND OFF THE COLLAR which his hair was and he got suspended for FOLLOWING THE RULES... It's nothing to do with PC, or arrogance, however ignorance seems to be coming into play here... He got suspended for following the rules, pure and simple!! And the school was found by the High Court of New Zealand to be WRONG. If he hasd been breaking the rules there wouldn't have been a problem, but since he was following them, there ya go, school bullying a pupil got found out and disgraced publicly..

As I said .. set of rules for some people and a set off rules for others ! .... even to get this far proves the arrogance !

Now you are just making no sense at all...

I can remember when I was at school in the 1940's, we all had to behave ourselves, learn our lessons, and do as we were told, or suffer the consequences, cane, detention, etc....

The result was that we all turned out to be good, sensible, law abiding, normal citizens.

At the age of 80, I fondly remember my school days, and all my school friends, and everything I learnt at school, whilst being encouraged to behave like a good scholar.

...it never did me any harm...and did me (and us) lots of good!

Paul....school uniform, short trousers, shirt tucked in, school cap, and BOTH socks pulled up.... ...!

I don't believe for a minute that the amount of discipline you had at school in any way impacts on whether or not you turn out a good, sensible, law abiding, normal citizen. On the other hand, whether or not you were consistently shown love by your parents or caregivers has a huge impact on most aspects of your life.
The length of your hair is hardly relevant to anything except how long since you had a haircut. Long hair certainly doesn't impair your ability to learn.
