Spent most of the day with some old , and not so old guys who "walked the walk "(and still are , in some case's) , so to speak.
This group were mainly men , but i met a lady who used to fly spitfires from the factory to the Squadrons who needed them..and a really nice guy who flew FAC for the USAF in Nam....and a much retired GP who flew Lancs and never flew again after the war ... amazing people, i had a little in common with some of them , but i felt very small beside them.
The thing that struck me most was the almost , off hand way they looked at what they had done ... no ego's , just doing the job , and a real hate for conflict on any level.
Excuse any spelling mistakes ....its been a long day.

yup i agree, grandfather wasn't in combat per see, but worked on the machines that did and lived with the men who flew them, he never talked about what had happened over in the islands, in fact he never really talked about much during the war period at all. a true generation of men and women who did what had to be done, but didn't like anything about it, goes for both sides of the war too.

"goes for both sides of the war too " very true .... thumbup1.gif Your Grandad was as important as any one else who served , there would be nobody at the front if people weren't behind them.
Ive read stuff about RAF fitters working 24 hours .... in one case , a tail change on a spit , while the pilot slept in the cockpit , amazing.
