Well, people have fallen through ice into extremely cold water, and been retrieved and brought back to life some hours later - so maybe he was chilled quickly and thoroughly enough to lapse into that type of coma.
What bothers me is that we can now expect a rash of "me-too" escapades by this young fool's contemporaries, complete with "selfies" posted to Facebook and so on, until even they realise just how lucky this lad was. If they remain alive to do so, of course.

Think of how much impact stress you can save on the landing gear by deploying it and using kids as an added buffer under your tyres...
