OMG .....Im old.
Just spent about 40mins with a couple of new flatmates (guys) watching the subject game .
This thing is really .... out there . Super violent , the language is ....well, every second word is f**k .

The young dude playing was explaining to me that he didn't have a gun , so he needed to find a cop to kill or injure and get a weapon ..... WTH.... and then he would be on his way.

I dont mind admitting , i play from time to time , one of the tom clancy (dated) ghost recon games , but that seems so tame compared to this ..... this (GTA 5) is just unwarranted , mindless , cr@p.
With ghost recon , if i get a good head shot , its because some dude was going to get me first .... not just for fun (or am i just trying to justify myself)
When i asked him , if his avatar(him , too him) could become "normal" as in not a crim .... i was asked "why" .... and ,no.

Tell you what , i really fear for the future if these people are allowed to have any say in my remaining years .....

Maybe im over reacting , but watching this young fella "become" the person in the game was scary.

Just like real life tongue.gif

I wouldn't worry Marty, it's been that way w GTA forever, even when it was a top-down game. Think of it this way, if they take their frustrations out in the game they may be less likely to do so in real life?
Oh, and I wouldn't worry about too many of the skills learned in the game being transferrable to RL either

I'm with Dean. A million people will go on to play this game in time, maybe 0.0001% will act out on it? A million people play Gran Turismo and 10% of them drive like that every Friday and Saturday night laugh.gif
Computer games are a realm you slip into, and escape to, before climbing out and carrying on with life as it's always been.
I should know. I've played hundreds of hours of similar games, Oblivion, Fallout, Skyrim - all open world where I can kill whoever I want, whenever I want. But it doesn't change my daily life.

Everyone wants to be the bad guy once in a while, and with this, as Dean said, you can get it out of your system hopefully without trying to do it for real.
I see what you are saying Marty, but yeah, I think you're over reacting biggrin.gif That game is meant to be played 'mean' - his avatar shouldn't reflect him in the real world. I wouldn't hurt a fly in the real world, but I've killed over 34,000 people online in Battlefield 3 alone laugh.gif

I think you are right to feel a bit uncomfortable with it. Especially if you are not accustomed to it. Virtually "killing" bad people for a good cause as a soldier on the side of 'right' is one thing. Killing police and innocent civilians is another. There is usually, and should be, an uncomfortable feeling there in all of us with something so inherently evil as murder. Without it we really would just be wild animals to one another.
I am not getting the game, in fact, any GTA version is banned in my house by my wife. But I do secretly watch the youtube videos when she isn't looking winkyy.gif I just love these open world games, and as you say, the graphics are just incredible!

Be interesting to see where the boundaries get drawn, ultimately...
Gangrape of nuns, perhaps?
Dismemberment of small children?
Somewhere you need to draw the line, there is very definitely a thing called Mind Pollution.

I played 1st person shooters, right from Doom1.
After a while you need to stand beside yourself and ask: is this really how you want to apply your mind.
I moved on, years ago.

Now I fly make-believe aeroplanes in cyberspace, strangely some people think that's pretty odd.

I am yet to walk into the cockpit and fly a real plane after playing MSFS. Mind you I have thought though what would happen if the pilots both suffered heart attacks and the call went out for any "pilots on board". What would I do??!! Especially in the B1900D's when you could see right into the cockpit.

Say "Oh yeah, I have played FlightSim in the past and have all the sceneries"?? lol

Back to GTA. My son has hired GTA5, he's played all the rest. I guess it's whatever floats your boat but to me it is a large percentage of mindless violence. I know there are missions and to be fair if I got into them I'd probably get more enthused, but the pretense of just shooting or running over anyone you want, performing amazing car stunts and falling off things, and walking away unharmed doesn't sit right for me.

I have.
First time I went up in a glider, I had rehearsed the flight in FS2002 (I think it was)
The instructor very soon asked: have you flown before? and handed me the controls for a good piece of the flight.

This is what is troubling me a little in the context of this discussion.
I'm not saying you are going to go and kill somebody.
But you very definitely have lost your innocence of the notion.
Surely, that cannot make for a civilised society.

GTA V has achieved 7 World Records it appears.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/games/92...7-world-records

There is some concern about the effects of screen violence, especially in adolescence: it is changing the development of young people's brains.
There are some brain imaging studies which recorded the way violent material changes brain activation in the short term, and brain function in the long term.
