While everyone is wondering what all this twerking is about...
The black boat is showing Oracle how to sail around San Francisco.
So badly was Team USA beaten in the 5th race this morning, they pulled the postponement card, usually reserved for when you are dismasted, or worse.
Even if you're not into sailing, the wing (Not sail: wing) on these giant cats is astonishing to see.
Plus of course, the hull/foil design, and the crews making it all work.
Seeing one of these foiling upwind at 40 knots is a symphony of technology and art.
Score today: four nil to TNZ
Yeah...

Me, i'm a Duck that wants to stick away from the water .... I'm a bird not a bob .. i mean duck

..... I am impressed with the entire tech of these boats < yes boats , they are not ships .
Competition - well how many times do they change the rules , guess depends on who has the moneys - last cups 'Denis the Meanest' .. today just shrug me shoulders ..
Now today if they rebuild the IJN Yamato or the Bismark and to save moneys get the museum'd US battleships back in action ... Albeit with 14" 15" 16" .. and 18 inch paint ball shells now that would make for a less tiresome been there done that type competition ... surely !

As a yacht-owner over a 30 year period, I enjoy every second of this racing. The moaning comments about "rich man's sport etc" leave me wondering. Anyone with an enjoyment
of technology has to look at this in awe. At the time I was involved in racing (on a modest scale) this type of performance was well beyond impossible. The thing that blows me away is the
fact that when sailing down wind (i.e. with the wind behind them) they are doubling the speed of the wind. The upwind foiling is just amazing and anyone with an interest in aero-dynamics must be impressed.
The fact that we are winning comprehensible (at this stage anyway) adds slightly to the enjoyment.

Managed to be up in San Fran to watch Team NZ "race" against Luna Rossa. These boats on the foil are really a sight to behold. TV just doesn't do them justice. The course is boring but designed to give the spectators a good view. Moa beer have a bar in the America's cup village....even has double beds in the Bar! US$11 + tax + tip for a beer was a bit steep though.
Oracle came out with the wrong sail and set up. They were wise to play the postponement card.
Go boys!

TNZ: 6
Larry's lads: -1
We dare hope...
I was a little optimistic about my upwind speed there: around 20 kts upwind, 40 down.
Still takes a little head-scratching for me how you go twice as fast as the wind though.
Today: 85km/h in a nice breeze.

Same reason aeroplanes fly - they don't call that big sticky-uppy thing a "wing" instead of a "sail" for nothing :-)

Takes a lot to get me up and about at 8 on a Sunday morning, but it would have taken a lot more than just an Eden Park rugby match the previous night to stop me for this one!
Not good for the health though - absolutely no heartbeat at all as TNZ heeled over... and over... until you knew you were watching the slow motion train smash that would end the AC challenge.
Dalton was not on board for the other race they lost too. I suspect they will nail him to the bowsprit for the remainder...
Great that the boys got back on the horse and sailed a perfect start to Race 9 before high wind stopped the show.
Oracle are back though, small changes they made are looking very competitive.
Look forward to the remainder, fat lady ain't even in the picture yet.

Right... deep breath now.
Tomorrow may see TNZ wrap this up, although it is by no means a foregone conclusion.
Oracle have upped the ante: their boat is fast now, and the team are sailing very well indeed.
In fact, I'd almost hope for a loss so we get one more day of sailing, I'm enjoying it that much!
Race 9 and 10 of this regatta must surely go down as the most orsim in recent times.
Up at 8 in the morning, then.

America's Cup Rules... Aaargh!
Yesterday they kill the race because the wind is too strong!
Today they kill the race because the wind is too weak!
Whatever... TNZ is going to win this, even if they have to paddle a galvanised iron washtub over the finish line
EDIT: AAAARGH! "most disappointing race so far..."
Don't know which causes more pain: having to wait another day, or the prospect of having to listen to Martin Tasker!

That's the same as the paint you were watching, not drying quickly enough for that second coat.
