You get out of life what you put in, if you don't like something that's cool, but negativity breeds negativity.
Properly set up and used as a communication and information tool Facebook can be very useful. Like others have mentioned, I get no emails and no spam and use it daily, and often. Anyone here who is connected with me will probably agree I'm on it a fair bit lol.
People use it to get in touch with me via its messaging system rather than texting or calling as when I'm out and have my phone I am connected, and it's easy to send info / pictures etc for work or pleasure.
When all is said and done if you don't like it then that's your business.

I can see both sides of the argument fairly clearly. Seeing as how computers "is what I do", I have to know something about a lot of things. I actually preferred Facebook when it was much simpler. I used it a bit back then. Now, I've got a "place holder" style page with minimal details. It's fairly clear how useful FB can be for a number of people. One of the big things that people simply aren't thinking of properly though is privacy. And by that, I know that most people simply don't realise how vulnerable their private lives are that they are posting on FB, and how very keen a number of groups of people are at getting their hands on such info and using for all manner of things. The common reply I get to that is "Yes, but I've got my profile locked down, and besides which FB has all these x,y,z protections and legal things in place". And all that is good, fine and dandy. But, people, do you know how incredibly easy it is for any number of "they"s and "them"s out there to get access to this stuff? And that's not even counting snooping governments. We tend to think of "our" governments in the "enlightened" west being fairly benign, with some good dollops of incompetency. I say, both are a total fiction, and if one digs around even a little, one begins to realise just how controlling, nefarious, nosey and downright unfriendly our "elected" puppet governments are. I realise this may well spark some people up and possibly bring on the tin-foil-hat eye-rolling, but I've done enough research, read enough main-stream articles, and seen enough weird / dodgy stuff in the "computer world" to know that ANY safety we have in the digital world is a pleasant illusion of comfort, glossed over with a thin veneer of civility and propriety. I strongly believe that those who have become reliant on, and exchange any depth of personal information via, the various "social networking" mediums will find themselves regretting it in the intermediate future.

hahaha love that pic above

I don't say much on there but use it to keep up with what is happening in the sim world and in my friend's worlds.
As mentioned above, play with the settings a bit, can the emails, hide the annoying people, it's not so scary. I use a "god send" addon/extension for my browser called
FB Purity. Helps me hide the junk on FB these days. Well worth a look to help tame the experience and filter what you do and don't want to see. Hides ads etc too.
And, I'm pretty sure most businesses that only post up a FB link in tv ads etc probably have a public link posted, no FB log in required.
